Cincinnati Bengals @ New York Jets
Two teams with playoff aspirations face off in MetLife Stadium as the Bengals travel to the northeast to face the Jets. Todd Bowles' crew has endured an offseason of championship talk as everyone's "sleeper pick" heading into the 2016 season.
"I've been having none of that (championship talk)," Bowles said. "We were 6-10 last year and have rookies starting at key spots. If we look ahead one bit we will get knocked down quickly."
Andy Dalton and his Cincinnati teammates suffered another disappointing end to their season last year with a playoff loss at Miami. The team hopes 2016 is finally the year they advance deep into January football.
"We can't focus on the past," wide receiver AJ Green said. "This (New York Jets) is a playoff team right in front of us. We need to start on the right foot."
WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Cincinnati's ability to keep Andy Dalton upright. Andrew Whitworth and company have a difficult task at hand keeping the beastly front seven of the New York Jets off of their quarterback.
PREDICTION: Jets win 23-13
Buffalo Bills @ Baltimore Ravens
To say that Buffalo Bills quarterback Aaron Rodgers is ready for the regular season to begin would be an understatement. Rodgers has documented his 'time off' rehabbing from a broken collarbone in hilarious fashion on his verified Instagram account. Over the past few weeks, as we have slogged through the monotony that is the pre-season, Rodgers has literally shown pictures of himself staring at clocks and calendars in anticipation of his team's date with the Ravens.
"It's like the first day of school," Rodgers said. "I've never had to miss time like this - it's been terrible. I just want to get back out there with my guys to compete."
Baltimore's John Harbaugh has also picked up on the national attention being paid to the Return of Rodgers and the lack of respect being directed towards his AFC North squad.
"I'm very happy for Aaron," Harbaugh said. "But we are coming to win in our home opener on Sunday. I hope all the best for him (Rodgers) but I want him flying home 0-1."
WHAT TO WATCH FOR: A more run-focused Todd Gurley. Gurley shattered the regular-season record for receptions in a season last year to go along with 1,200 yards receiving. He also added 1,400 yards rushing in one of the more dominant NFL seasons in recent memory. In hopes of allowing Gurley to finish his rookie contract healthily, head coach Rex Ryan has vowed to split up some of the rushing and catching duties amongst the Buffalo playmakers (we will believe it when we see it).
PREDICTION: Bills win 27-20
Miami Dolphins @ Seattle Seahawks
In Miami, the philosophy is simple: Run the football, finish every tackle, and stay out of the headlines. Although the Dolphins were able to parlay this belief system into a Super Bowl victory last February, from the moment the confetti stopped falling on Levi's Stadium, the wheels seemed to fall off the Miami train as the headlines started piling up. Head coach Joe Philbin was fired 2-days after the team's Super Bowl victory parade due to a "difference of opinions" with their general manager regarding the roster's direction. Rookies Reggie Ragland and Andrew Billings suffered early injuries that limited their abilities to develop during training camp. Left tackle Lane Johnson tested positive for a banned substance for a second time and is now suing supplement companies instead of blocking. The team spent all summer negotiating with Super Bowl winning quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick only to hand the keys to the offense to untested rookie Jacoby Brissett (whom the team acquired in a post draft day trade with their rivals from New England). This was before the team traded supposed starter Jimmy Garoppolo (also within the division) to the New York Jets. The team also traded pro bowler Marcell Dareus to the San Diego Chargers days before Dareus was suspended for violating the league's substance abuse policy. This set off waves across the NFL community accusing the Dolphins of trading "damaged" goods (the Dolphins have denied any prior knowledge of a looming suspension for Dareus).
"It's been a circus," head coach Adam Gase said. "But all that goes away once we take the field in Seattle Sunday."
Russell Wilson summed up his team's hopes and expectations for 2016 with two simple words in his latest press conference: "Super Bowl."
Seattle came :42 seconds short of defeating the Green Bay Packers in last year's NFC Championship game before Tyrod Taylor led his team on their version of "The Drive" in the Lambeau Field snowstorm.
"We are still heartbroken," Wilson said. "We need to use that heartbreak to move us forward and accomplish our goals for this season."
WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Can Jacoby Brissett take advantage of his opportunities. We all know Chris Ivory, Thomas Rawls, and Duke Johnson will see plenty of carries. But what will Brissett do with his 10-15 chances to affect the outcome of the game? Russell Wilson has a tall task facing off against Khalil Mack, Bobby Wagner, and Earl Thomas' defensive unit, but he is up for the challenge. Is Brissett ready to tame the NFL's toughest road challenge?
PREDICTION: Seahawks win 24-21 in OT
New England Patriots @ Arizona Cardinals
All has summer we have seen countless articles being written about Geno Smith's ability to manage the New England offense in Tom Brady's 4-game absence. Although no one believes it is possible, Bill Belichick has continued to try to convince pundits that Smith is up to the task.
"Geno is our guy right now," Belichick said. "We are confident in our position strength there."
The Arizona Cardinals do not care who is under center for New England. They only care about Super Bowl LI.
"We have the team to make it all the way," coach Bruce Arians said. "To be honest, every team on our schedule is an obstacle for us to overcome. We want to punish every opponent."
WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Tyrann Mathieu and Patrick Peterson versus Geno Smith. Vegas has the over under for interceptions at three. Bill Belichick (if he is as smart as he thinks he is) would be wise to keep Geno's pitch count below three to avoid just this.
PREDICTION: Cardinals win 33-16

Preseason Over, Trades Galore & On To Regular Season!
Each AFC East squad made it through the preseason with a relatively low number of injuries. Only the Buffalo Bills saw potentially major contributors (Eric Reid and Markus Wheaton) sustain injuries that will lead to them missing games during the regular season.
The Bills made a splash after their final preseason tilt by dealing newly signed outside linebacker Mark Barron to the Seahawks in exchange for outside linebacker Jalani Jenkins. The move saves Buffalo over $5 million dollars in salary cap space over each of the next two seasons, which could become useful if the team hopes to re-sign Pro Bowl guards Josh Sitton and TJ Lang.
"Business move," Rex Ryan said. "I don't know why we sign a guy and then deal him right before games count. I feel like we're becoming the NBA."
The New York Jets also were able to flip an expensive low-contributor (runningback Shane Vereen) to the Cleveland Browns for a 2018 2nd round draft choice. The Browns are seemingly forgetting their Moneyball roots whenever they make deals with the Jets.
"It's honestly like they (the New York Jets) have some secret photos of the Cleveland execs," one NFL General Manager said. "I'm not sure it's good for the league to have the Browns serving as New York's bank."
In another head-scratching move, the Miami Dolphins were able to salvage their tumultuous off-season by dealing cornerback Xavier Rhodes and wide receiver Marquise Lee to the Minnesota Vikings for 2016 1st round wide receiver Laquon Treadwell. The Dolphins had been involved in multiple talk radio sessions lambasting their deal that sent Marcell Dareus to the San Diego Chargers (Dareus was suspended a week after the deal for violating the league's substance abuse policy). The team has also been dealing with injuries to their top two draft picks Reggie Ragland and Andrew Billings. Lane Johnson also stole league headlines with his second failed drug test which will cause him to miss the first 10-games of the 2016 season.
"Adding Laquon has saved our offseason," Adam Gase said. "It's been tough, but we now have this amazing conclusion leading up to our first game."
It is rare for a newly drafted first rounder to be dealt the following season; It is even more rare for the deal to occur for players with expiring contracts and limited value.
"Xavier (Rhodes) fits Minnesota's scheme," one AFC scout said. "But something seems wrong with this one. Dealing with the Dolphins right now feels like going to a used car lot and getting pressured into walking away with an '82 Firebird with two flat tires and no brakes."
We are now finally ready for real football and the soap opera that is the off & preseason is now over.

2016 Season - Preseason Week #1
Jacksonville Jaguars @ New York Jets
Notes: Todd Bowles was able to unveil all his new toys in a 34-31 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill was efficient and without any turnovers (his only two requirements to keep the starting QB job this season). Myles Jack, Jalen Ramsey, and Darron Lee all flashed subtle moments of speed and brilliance which has pundits pre-claiming this Jets unit as an '85 Bears clone. New runningback LeGarrette Blount made a unique decision to pitch the ball to a lineman teammate during a screen pass...The lateral missed the intended hands by 5-yards and was picked up and returned for a Jaguars touchdown. Jimmy Garoppolo looked good in the green-and-white with 192 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns.
Miami Dolphins @ New York Giants
Notes: In what is a dream scoreline for Adam Gase's 'ground-and-pound' outfit, the Dolphins wore down the New York Giants 17-6 in their preseason opener. The trio of Chris Ivory, Thomas Rawls, and Duke Johnson Jr. look primed to continue the Miami run as the premier rushing attack in the NFL. Rookie quarterbacks Jacoby Brissett and Cardale Jones were smart with the football and demonstrated elite arm talent on a few throws. They both appear to be learning the ropes of the NFL quarterback position. Bobby Wagner was in mid-season form with a well-timed blitz and sack of Eli Manning early in the first. Justin Tucker missed his first field goal attempt of the season (ironically, he did the same last year before settling into one of the best seasons in his career).
Indianapolis Colts @ Buffalo Bills
Notes: Rex Ryan played it pretty close to the vest in a 20-6 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Aaron Rodgers led his unit on a 12-play drive into Colts territory deep into the first quarter. The drive ended poorly after Rodgers' protection broke down and the future Hall of Famer was hit, causing the ball to pop up in the air into the arms of a Colts linebacker who raced 88 yards for an Indy touchdown. Ryan was visibly fuming at his offensive linemen and did not allow Rodgers to re-enter the game. Todd Gurley looked again unstoppable and will surely garner NFL MVP votes at the end of the season. Safety Eric Reid re-introduced himself to the Buffalo brass with a few nice plays - the third-year player looks to unseat Adrian Amos as the starting free safety.

Blockbuster: Division Rivals from New York & Miami Swing Huge Deal
The Miami Dolphins have agreed to send quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to the New York Jets.
Garoppolo fell out of favor with Miami's brass after his "flop" in a blowout loss a year ago, but still help high esteem around the league.
The Jets agreed to send fullback Jalston Fowler to the Dolphins along with exchanging first rounders this year (Jets sent Philadelphia's #1 for Miami's #1). The Jets also gave up a 2nd rounder in the upcoming draft along with a 2nd rounder in 2018 (while receiving a 2018 3rd rounder from the Dolphins as well).
"He is our guy," Todd Bowles said. "We've loved him for quite some time. We had him as a 90 coming out of college and are ecstatic to have him in the mix."
First year head coach Adam Gase seemed pleased with the deal on his team's end.
"We are betting on ourselves by hoping our pick is a late round pick," Gase said. "We love what Jalston (Fowler) brings to our team and we'll use that second to add depth to our squad."
The storylines will now write themselves whenever the Jets and Dolphins face off.
November 6 can't get here soon enough.

Bills send McCoy to Bay Area for Draft Picks
- By Scoops Caligiri

- Published: August 17, 2016 at 10:03 p.m.
The NFL's odds on Super Bowl favorites (according to Las Vegas) have made a cost-cutting move ahead of their second pre-season game, moving All-Pro defensive tackle Gerald McCoy to the San Francisco 49ers for the team's 2017 2nd and 3rd round draft picks.
McCoy's heavy cap number was guaranteed through the 2017 with the team holding his rights through 2021 (at roughly $13 million per year during the life of the contract).
Salary cap experts around the country were scratching their heads wondering how the Bills would field a 53-man roster to start the season. Now, with $13 million more in breathing room, Buffalo can rest assured that they will not only have a full squad, but that they may also find a way to keep one of their Pro Bowl guards once they hit free agency after the season.
"You know, sometimes I wish we had baseball's rules (no salary cap)," Rex Ryan said. "It pisses me off to lose Gerald, especially at this point. But I get it, we have guys who can step in and do the job."
Rookie Jonathan Bullard now looks to have a more prominent role that previously thought. The rookie seems up for the task posting the following on his verified Twitter account:
Time to get that SB ring - you all knew I was comin' for that #1 spot. #SBLI

New York Jets Announce Major Plans and Sign LB Darron Lee

- Published: August 17, 2016 at 10:02 p.m.
On the eve of the 3-Guys Madden League final pre-season free agent signing period, the New York Jets have made three major announcements.
Earlier in the day, the team informed speedy wide receiver Tavon Austin that they would not be picking up his 5th year option (saving more than $12 million in cap space during the 2017 season).
Another Jet who is set for a huge pay day, Kawann Short, was also informed flatly that he would be allowed to enter the free agent market. Short was thought to have been in the long-term plans for Todd Bowles' squad, but with the deluge of talent on NY's defensive unit, someone had to go.
"I'm disappointed that I won't be here next year," Short said. "But I do respect them telling me now. I will play my tail off this year and see what's in store moving forward."
New York, with the first waiver spot in tomorrow's free agent frenzy, have announced that they have come to terms on a 4-year deal with free agent linebacker Darron Lee out of Ohio State. The team also holds a 5th year option on the hybrid playmaker.

Jacoby Brissett Named Starter for Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins have opted to name a starter at the quarterback position prior to their first pre-season game. Most pundits thought the job would certainly be Jimmy Garoppolo's after starting the 2015 season under center before making way for Ryan Fitzpatrick. However, it looks like the team's highly praised rookie Jacoby Brissett has beat out Garoppolo to earn the starting gig for the reigning champions.
"I'm humbled and honored to be in this position," Brissett said. "I still view this as a day-to-day learning and growing exercise. Being named the starter doesn't change that."
Head Coach Adam Gase glowed about his rookie signal caller.
"He has everything you want in a leader," Gase said. "Conventional wisdom says to give him time to grow. We will give him that on the field. I'm not worried about his development - he's going to keep developing as our guy."
An obviously downtrodden Garoppolo said all the right things after the decision was made.
"I am disappointed on one hand but happy for Jacoby on the other," Garoppolo said. "I will work hard in the event my number is called and we will re-evaluate my future when that time comes."
The third year quarterback has 2-years remaining on his rookie deal and could be a valuable trade asset after the season if the Dolphins truly have found their future in Brissett.

Round 3: SS Miles Killebrew (Southern Utah) - 68
Round 3: LG Christian Westerman (Arizona State) - 65
2016 Free Agents & Acquisitions Added (Top 3)
HB Chris Ivory - 82 (free agent)
CB Bashaud Breeland - 81 (trade from Washington)
LT Morgan Moses - 78 (trade from Washington)
2016 Projected Starters (Offense)
QB: Jimmy Garoppolo - 72

WR2: Jeremy Kerley - 72
TE: Clive Warford - 77
LT: Morgan Moses - 78
LG: David DeCastro - 84
C: Jack Mewhort - 85
RG: Trai Turner - 87
RT: Lane Johnson - 86
2016 Offensive Preview
Ground and pound worked to perfection during 2015 Super Bowl championship run. Moving Kelechi Osemele to the Redskins did not make a ton of sense unless Bashaud Breeland turns into a true #1 cornerback. Where is the scoring going to come from? Same question was asked a year ago and bland play-calling and stubborn willingness to stick to running game paid off. Is this possible in vastly improved AFC East?
2016 Projected Starters (Defense)
LE: Khalil Mack - 94
DT: Leonard Williams - 81
DT: Star Lotulelei - 79
RE: Courtney Upshaw - 78
LOLB: Reggie Ragland - 74
MLB: Bobby Wagner - 88
ROLB: Eric Kendricks - 76
CB1: Bashaud Breeland - 81
CB2: Kyle Fuller - 80
FS: Earl Thomas - 93
SS: Calvin Pryor - 83
2016 Defensive Preview
Hard hitting and gritty defensive unit will look to cause abundance of turnovers similar to 2015 campaign. With Khalil Mack continuing to apply relentless pressure, Earl Thomas can cover for the continued development of the Breeland/Fuller duo. Calvin Pryor and Reggie Ragland should have free reign to attack ball carriers and short crossing routes.
2016 Team Preview
Not sure if last year's game plan will cut it this year. Toughest schedule in NFL looms as team looks to avoid Super Bowl hangover. You can never bet against a former champion, but the ceiling looks to be no more than 10-wins (and even that would be a miracle). Team should start 2-4 with games against the Bills and Jets to follow (2-6 looks very realistic).
2016 Projection: 6-10, 4th AFC East
Looking Towards 2017
Ton of cap room to go after any/all big name free agents on the market while locking up core of team for Super Bowl run (behind Jacoby Brissett) in 2018.

2016 Offensive Preview
Best interior offensive line talent in NFL history. McCarron needs to revert to Alabama days with ball security while allowing defense to win games (behind strong running game). David Johnson, Derrick Henry, and LeGarrette Blount should each see 15+ carries per game. Team needs to take page from 2015 Dolphins playbook with such an outstanding defense leading the way. Austin/Fleener can be utilized specifically and in timely ways after establishing the run.
2016 Projected Starters (Defense)

ROLB: Navarro Bowman - 88
CB1: Sean Smith - 88
CB2: Joe Haden - 86

2016 Defensive Preview
Three 'least accomplished' players on defense are former Top-10 NFL Draft picks. On paper, scariest/nastiest defense to be assembled in last 30 years. Beasley, Jack & Ramsey are matchup nightmares for opposing offenses. Combination of Donald & Short best DT duo in NFL. Haden is the #1 corner on 90% of teams in NFL. Only weakness: AJ McCarron's lack of experience.
2016 Team Preview
If team had established quarterback leading the offense they would be looking at AFC's #1 seed. Regardless, team will compete for AFC East title. Team should be 8-5 at minimum heading into final 3-weeks against all AFC East opponents. Finishing home against Miami, on the road against the Patriots, and then home against Buffalo, the Jets will control their own destiny.
2016 Projection: 10-6, 2nd AFC East
Looking Towards 2017
Team set up for 5-year run of dominance with youth and talent assembled. Kawann Short could be out of the door in 2017 due to some salary cap issues, but team's history of drafting/finding talent can potentially replace the Pro Bowler (Hassan Ridgeway's growth may impact the offer New York sends to Short's camp).

Kawann Short could be out of the door in 2017 due to some salary cap issues, but team's history of drafting/finding talent can potentially replace the Pro Bowler (Hassan Ridgeway's growth may impact the offer New York sends to Short's camp).

2016 Projected Starters (Offense)

2016 Offensive Preview
Not a weak link in the group. Rodgers will benefit in an historic fashion from the additions of Amari Cooper and Josh Doctson. An increased emphasis on the running game between Pro Bowl Guards Lang and Sitton will allow Gurley to rack up yards on the inside before allowing Rodgers and company to pick apart teams when they creep up. Easily the league's most explosive offense heading into 2016 - and it isn't even close.
2016 Projected Starters (Defense)

2016 Defensive Preview
Needs offense to run the ball to protect subtle deficiencies in secondary. Is the combination of Hayward & Randall strong enough to facilitate the expected Super Bowl run? Atkins/McCoy second best combination in NFL (behind New York Jets' tandem of Aaron Donald and Kawann Short). Pass rush must come from linebacking corps - Ealy & Johnson not as explosive as you'd like.
2016 Team Preview
No way this team wins fewer than 10 games. AFC East will be a war. Must handle business against Brady-less Patriots in Week 4 after tough games against Jets and Arizona Cardinals. Week 17 versus Jets should be for the division title.
2016 Projection: 11-5, 1st AFC East
Looking Towards 2017
Cap space may be an issue as team looks to resign Luke Willson, Vance McDonald, TJ Lang, & Josh Sitton. Team already pressed with limited cap space moving forward. Next two 1st round picks belong to Oakland after Amari Cooper trade. 2016 looming as Super Bowl or bust season in Buffalo.

Dolphins at it Again: OL Kelechi Osemele Dealt to Washington for CB Bashaud Breeland
Months after signing left tackle Kelechi Osemele to a 5-year, $58.5 million dollar contract, the Miami Dolphins have shipped their anchorman to the Washington Redskins for up-and-coming cornerback Bashaud Breeland and right tackle Morgan Moses.
Breeland immediately brings a swagger to the Miami secondary - the third year player out of Clemson already drives around with a "Breeland Island" sticker on his car.
"I am preparing to be the best in the game," Breeland said. "Now the island gets to move to Miami so we can bring back another Lombardi."
The deal puts the Redskins close to the salary cap limit, but with Pierre Garcon's expiring contract coming after the season, the team was in a place to gamble to protect Kirk Cousins while beefing up their rushing attack.
"It's great for us," Cousins said. "We want to run the football and my job is to protect it. Kelechi will help us across the board.
