2022 3GML Season - Week 18

Detroit Lions @ Green Bay Packers
GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers didn't miss a beat without their starting quarterback, as back up rookie Sam Howell lead the team to a dominating 38-6 victory.  The win keeps the Packers (11-5-1) hot as the playoffs approach and the only question now is whether or not Tua Tagovailoa will be back in time for the wild card round next week.

Offensively in this one, James Robinson had his best game of the year, rushing for 130 yards and two touchdowns.

"With Tua out, I knew the game plan would be a little more run heavy.  I was ready."  Robinson said.

Defensively, the Packers held a pitiful Detroit offense to six points and look ready to avoid a repeat of last year where they gave up 52 points to the Seahawks in the first round.

"We'll play anyone," Cornerback Patrick Surtain said.  "We ready."

Green Bay now will host Washington in the wild card round next week.

Arizona Cardinals @ San Francisco 49ers
SANTA CLARA - The San Francisco 49ers lost a tough one at home 27-17 to the Arizona Cardinals.  With the loss, the 49ers (12-5) fall out of the NFC number one seed and now will play as the three seed in the wild card round next week.  It was death by a thousand paper cuts as the Case Keenum-led Cardinal offense ate up the clock and moved the ball in small chunks all afternoon.

"Have to be better," Coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game.  We controlled our own destiny and didn't get it done.  We have to regroup now and be ready to make our run.  We're in the dance and that's all that matters now."

The 49ers will turn around and play Arizona again next week in the wild card round.

Houston Texans @ Indianapolis Colts
INDIANAPOLIS - The Houston Texans (11-6) lost against the Indianapolis Colts 22-17.  In a tight back and forth affair, it was the Colts who came out on top.  Brandin Cooks was once again excellent for the Texans with 139 yards and two touchdowns.

"Wasn't good enough again.  Just like last week where I played well and we still lost,'' Cooks said. "Gotta turn this thing around."

The loss didn't hurt the Texans playoff seeding as they remain number two and will host the seven-seed Denver Broncos next week.

2022 3GML Season - Week 17

San Francisco 49ers @ Las Vegas Raiders
LAS VEGAS - The San Francisco 49ers kept rolling as they took down the Las Vegas Raiders 24-6 Sunday.  With the win, the Niners move to 12-4 and look hot as the playoffs approach.  However, with no clear winner of the NFC's number one seed heading to week 18, look for San Francisco to keep playing for something when they take the field next week.

In this one, the 49ers followed their successful script of solid defense and timely Justin Fields runs. Fields, who is a virtual lock for MVP, ran for 90 more yards and wasn't asked to pass much.

"Feeling good right now," Fields said.  "I know I can help this team with my legs and I understand my role."

San Francisco finishes its regular season next week against the Arizona Cardinals.

Minnesota Vikings @ Green Bay Packers
GREEN BAY - The heart attacks continued as the Green Bay Packers (10-5-1) squeaked out another close win, this time 29-28 against the Minnesota Vikings.  Receiver Amon Ra St. Brown was electric out of the slot for the Packers, amassing 123 yards receiving.

"This offense still has more to show people," St. Brown said.  "Just wait."

The win gives Green Bay ten on the year and they'll look to make it eleven next week when they host the Detroit Lions.

Jacksonville Jaguars @ Houston Texans
HOUSTON - The Houston Texans (11-5) lost a heartbreaker 32-31 to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the most heartbreaking way.  Down the one point with less than a minute left, quarterback Gardner Minshew led his team down the field only to run the ball and let time expire rather than throw it away and let his kicker attempt one for the win.

The loss was crippling for Houston as dropping one to a team like Jacksonville in this fashion right before the playoffs is likely to impact player morale.

Houston will try to now finish strong in its regular season finale next week on the road against the Indianapolis Colts.

2022 3GML Season - Week 16

Washington Commanders @ San Francisco 49ers

SANTA CLARA - The San Francisco 49ers cooled off the Washington Commanders Sunday with an exciting 34-20 win.  With the Niners up seven, the Commanders had a chance to tie the game, but safety Marcus Williams had other plans and intercepted Taylor Heinicke to return it for a touchdown sealing the win for San Francisco (11-4).

The Niners now travel to Las Vegas to take on the Raiders.

Green Bay Packers @ Miami Dolphins

MIAMI - Facing their former quarterback, the Green Bay Packers couldn't overcome Aaron Rodgers stellar play and fell 31-23 to the Miami Dolphins.  Rodgers who likely had extra motivation to beat the team was outstanding, throwing zero interceptions and taking zero sacks on the day.

A silver lining for the Packers (9-5-1) was finally having huge games from both of their all-pro receivers.   Stefon Diggs and Justin Jefferson both had over 90 yards receiving on the afternoon.  Green Bay will need more of this if they are going to make a run in the playoffs.

The loss likely knocks Green Bay out of the hunt for the number one seed in the NFC, but we'll see if they continue to play their starters down the stretch.  They next return home to host the Minnesota Vikings.

Houston Texans @ Tennessee Titans

TENNESSEE - The Houston Texans (11-4) claimed the AFC South Division title for the 2nd consecutive year with their 17-10 win over the Tennessee Titans.  The Titans down a large number of key players including quarterback Ryan Tannehill, couldn't muster much offense against the mighty Texans D.

Houston will look to keep in the hunt for the AFC's number one seed next week as they host the Jacksonville Jaguars.

2022 3GML Season - Week 15

Los Angeles Rams @ Green Bay Packers
GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers won back to back games for the first time since week 4 as they easily handled the banged up Rams.  Their 37-3 win combined with Minnesota's loss clinches the NFC North for the Packers for the 3rd consecutive year.

Green Bay (9-4-1) played an error free game and forced multiple turnovers on the night.  Patrick Surtain II had two interceptions including one for a touchdown, while Haason Reddick had three sacks on the night.

"Man, he's always just there," Surtain said of Reddick.  "Like you look up and he's just there making a play."

Green Bay will look to keep rolling next week as they travel to take on former Packer and two-time 3GML MVP Aaron Rodgers and the Dolphins.

Kansas City Chiefs @ Houston Texans
HOUSTON - Banged up and slow out of the gates, the Houston Texans fell 45-21 to the white-hot Kanas City Chiefs.  The loss will give the Texans some questions as their defense, which has been strong all year, looked flummoxed trying to stop Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.

Houston (10-4) will now turn its attention to the AFC South as their last three games are all against division opponents.  Tennessee and Indianapolis are lurking and the Texans will have work to do if they want to host a playoff game in January.  Up first, the Tennessee Titans.

San Francisco 49ers @ Seattle Seahawks
SEATTLE - The San Francisco 49ers clinched the NFC West title for the 2nd consecutive year after taking down the Seattle Seahawks 30-20 Thursday night.  With the win, the Niners will host a home playoff game as they begin their quest of getting back to the Super Bowl.

As for the game itself, the San Francisco run game combined with a great defensive effort was more than enough to keep the Seahawks at bay.  It was an omen of what was to come, Seattle fumbled the opening kickoff, giving the 49ers great field position.  Even though it resulted in a field goal, it set the tone and San Francisco never looked back.

Alvin Kamara had a pair of touchdowns offensively and was happy to be back in the playoffs.

"Great game.  We need to celebrate this one," Kamara said. "Thinking of hitting the strip in Vegas."

San Francisco now turns it attention to playoff seeding as it hosts the NFC leading Washington Commanders.

2022 3GML Season - Week 14

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ San Francisco 49ers

SANTA CLARA - Tampa Bay's defense proved too much an obstacle for the San Francisco 49ers Sunday as the Buccaneers ground their way to a 23-13 victory.  That, combined with a 49ers (9-4) defense which was running on reserves and couldn't get the stops they needed, led to a long afternoon.

Vita Vea was a game wrecker for Tampa and the normal rush attach from Justin Fields and company was neutralized as a result.  The loss was a tough one for the Niners as the playoff picture starts to become clearer.  San Francisco was in the hunt for the one seed, but will need a little more help down the stretch now.  On the bright side, the division feels like it's all but wrapped up with both Los Angeles and Arizona losing their quarterbacks for the season.

The quest to get back on track begins next week as the 49ers travel to take on division rival Seattle.

Houston Texans @ Dallas Cowboys

DALLAS - In a stunner, the Houston Texans walloped the Dallas Cowboys 35-23.  In what was billed as a marquee matchup, the Texans left little doubt who was the better team.  While the score was close in the end, the game was not, as the Cowboys scored a couple late garbage-time touchdowns to make it respectable.  With the win, Houston moves to 10-3 and stays in contention for number seed in the AFC.

In the game, Jerome Baker scored two defensive touchdowns on scoop and scores.

"Right place, right time man," Baker said.  "Love helping my team win."

Houston will try to keep rolling next week against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Thursday, December 8, 2022

2022 3GML Season - Week 13

Green Bay Packers @ Chicago Bears

CHICAGO - The Green Bay Packers used defense and special teams to beat their rival Chicago 36-6 Sunday at Soldier Field.  The Bears, who are in full rebuild mode and starting a backup quarterback didn't present much of a challenge to the NFC North leading Packers (8-4-1).

The Bears (2-11) stating PJ Walker struggled to move the ball all day.  This allowed Green Bay to have excellent field position and use a balanced run and pass game to put things away early.  Even though they probably didn't need the extra points, the defense gave them some with Patrick Surtain collecting his league leading 8th interception and taking it back for a touchdown.

Green Bay maintains a comfortable division lead and will look to rest up before the final stretch next week on their bye.

Cleveland Browns @ Houston Texans

HOUSTON - The Houston Texans spoiled quarterback Deshaun Watson's return to the Browns from suspension with a 26-23 win.  Houston (9-3), the current AFC one seed, looked awful offensively all game. As usual though, the defense was superb and kept the Texans in the game early.

With not much going well for Houston and the Browns (7-5) up 16-12 in the 4th quarter, things changed quickly with the Texans defense taking matters in to their own hands.  Cornerback Mike Hilton intercepted Watson and took it back for a touchdown giving Houston the lead.  On the very next possession, Watson was sacked by Azeez Ojulari causing a fumble.  The ball was scooped up and ran back by Melvin Ingram for another Texan TD, putting the game out of reach.

"Some times your offense wins game, sometimes it's the defense," Hilton said.  "It's a team effort here."

Houston will look to get their offense clicking again next week as they take on the other team from Texas, the Cowboys.

Miami Dolphins @ San Francisco 49ers

SANTA CLARA - Down multiple starters and battling torrential rain, the San Francisco 49ers found a way to get the 24-17 win over the visiting Miami Dolphins (6-6).  Justin Fields once again ran the Niners (9-3) to victory with 139 yards on the ground. It was Fields’ 8th 100 yard rushing game this season, bringing his season total to 1193 yards.

San Francisco has a comfortable three game lead in their division, but is fighting the injury bug in their locker room.  The cushion may be needed as they limp across the finish line.  Their goal now is to win the division and get healthy in time for a home playoff game.

All their injuries to the defense will be tested next week at they host Tom Brady and that Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

2022 3GML Season - Week 12

 Houston Texans @ Miami Dolphins

MIAMI - The Houston defense shut down Aaron Rodgers and the Miami Dolphins en route to a 16-15 win.  The victory keeps the Texans (8-3) tied atop the AFC in a tight race for the number one seed and a first round bye.

Green Bay Packers @ Philadelphia Eagles

PHILADELPHIA - Green Bay lost a heartbreaker in Philadelphia as Tua Tagovailoa was unable to complete a late 4th and goal that would have tied the game.  Tagovailoa thew for 405 yards, but he needed five more to give his team a shot at victory.  Even with the loss, the Packers (7-4-1) still hold a comfortable division in the NFC North.

New Orleans Saints @ San Francisco 49ers

SANTA CLARA - Without their leader and quarterback Justin Fields, the San Francisco 49ers looked out of sorts in a 27-10 loss to the New Orleans Saints.  The 49ers (8-3) only ran 47 offensive plays on the afternoon and will look to flush this one as the get ready for Fields return next week.

Tuesday, November 22, 2022

2022 3GML Season - Week 11

Tennessee Titans @ Green Bay Packers
GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers may soon be known as the next iteration of the cardiac kids after another close game resulted in a 20-17 overtime win.  The Packers (7-3-1) looked like they were staring down another walk off field goal loss in overtime, but a timely Shaq Thompson interception set up their own Jason Sanders walk-off field goal.

The player of the game, however, was punter Matt Haack who pinned 4 punts inside the ten yard line.  The long field likely kept Derrick Henry and the Titans (6-4) from points on more than one occasion.

"Matt had a hell of a game," Coach Matt LaFleur said.  "Special teams is just as important as the other two phases of the game.  We don't win that game without Matt Haack."

"I appreciate the love," Haack said after the game.  "This league was founded on a deep appreciation of the punter position, so this is for all those who appreciate punting stats."

Green Bay gets 10 days off now before they take on Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Washington Commanders @ Houston Texans
HOUSTON - The Washington Commanders controlled things from the opening kickoff en route to a 30-15 win over the Houston Texans.  Washington (8-3) took what the defense gave them and "matriculated" the ball down the field all afternoon.  Highlighting their effort was quarterback Taylor Heinicke, who played clean football from a clean pocket, throwing for two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Houston (7-3) was a bit sluggish on offense out of the gate and never found rhythm with the run or pass game.  When the team finally did get into scoring range, they came up empty with two Rodrigo Blankenship missed field goals and failed fourth down attempt.

"Not good enough," Coach David Shaw said.  "We will be making adjustments to our game planning going forward because I won't stand for another effort like that."

Houston will head south next to take on Aaron Rodgers and the Miami Dolphins.

San Francisco 49ers @ Arizona Cardinals
MEXICO CITY - NFL fans in Mexico were not disappointed after watching the San Francisco 49ers score 18 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to beat the Arizona Cardinals 30-27.  Arizona (5-6) looked in control early in this this one with 21 of their 27 points coming off 49er turnovers.  As things headed into the 4th, San Francisco (8-2) found themselves on the wrong side of a 27-12 score.  An early field goal in the quarter cut it to 12 and that's when things got really crazy.

Down two scores with little time left, the 49er offense drove down the field and scored a touchdown leaving around 2 minutes on the clock.  Armed with all three of their timeouts, the defense was able to force a three and out, giving the ball back to the offense with 1:38 to go.  Justin Fields led the team to midfield via multiple short passes that ate up valuable time.  Finally, down to a 4th and ten with 17 seconds left, Fields found DJ Chark running down the sideline and connected for a 50 yard touchdown, winning the game for San Francisco.

The win, however, could be a costly one as MVP front-runner Fields was seen wincing in pain after the game.  Early word is a separated left shoulder, but there is no information on if the versatile QB will miss time.

The 49ers now return home to take on the New Orleans Saints.

2022 3GML Season - Week 10

Los Angeles Chargers @ San Francisco 49ers

SANTA CLARA - The NFC leading San Francisco 49ers couldn't overcome a litany of injuries in the defensive secondary and dropped their second game of the year 34-20 to the Los Angeles Chargers.  The 49ers were down five defensive backs and Los Angeles (4-5) knew just where to attack, racking up 21 points on three touchdown passes by Justin Herbert in the first quarter.  The 49ers were never able to get back in it and fell to 7-2 on the year.

Justin Fields continued his absolute tear rushing the football racking up another 138 yards on the ground including a 27 yard touchdown run.  The Bears QB is now up to 990 yards on the season.  At this pace, not only will Fields obliterate Lamar Jackson's rushing record for a quarterback (1206 yards), but a 2,000 yard season is not out of the question.  Coach Kyle Shanahan has designed an offense around Fields ability to run the ball and its changing the game.

However, fields likely doesn't care about the stats today as the loss opens the door for a contested race to the number one seed in the NFC.  San Francisco will look to get back on track next week when they take on division rival Arizona.

Houston Texans @ New York Giants

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - The Houston Texans held the visiting New York Giants to 13 total rushing yards earning them a 30-17 victory.  With the win, Houston (7-2) currently sits as the number one AFC seed.  However, there are a staggering eight teams right behind them at 6-3.

New York (6-3) couldn't get much going on the day and this one was lopsided the entire way.  The news wasn't all great for the Texans, though.  Star defensive back Donte Jackson, who had two interceptions in the game ruptured his Achilles and is out for the season.  Jackson, who was anchoring this Houston defensive unit will surely be missed.  It's next man up mentality for this defensive group and budding star Tariq Woolen will look to fill the void made by Jackson's injury.

Houston will head home to take on another NFC East opponent in the Washington Commanders.

Dallas Cowboys @ Green Bay Packers

GREEN BAY - In what seems to be a pattern, the Packers again found themselves in a 17 point deficit, only to once again climb out of it to tie the game.  However, this time, the task was too tall as Dak Prescott lead the Dallas Cowboys (6-3) down the field for a game wining field goal.

Things were going very well for the Packers (6-3-1) early but three turnovers, two of them for defensive scores, in a matter of two and a half minutes proved too big of a hole.  Up 14-13, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was strip-sacked leading to a Micah Parsons scoop and score.  On the next drive, Tagovailoa threw an interception that lead to a Cowboy field goal.  And finally right before the half,  Trevon Diggs jumped an out route and picked off the Packers QB taking it back 88 yards for the touchdown.  Before the Lambeau faithful could blink, it was 31-14.

"I'm sick of this s%!*," receiver Justin Jefferson (137 yards, TD) said.  "We are playing in too many of these close whacky games.  We are too talented and need to be blowing teams out."

Green Bay has a short week to lick its wounds as the Titans come to town for Thursday Night Football.

2022 3GML Season - Week 9

Green Bay Packers @ Detroit Lions

DETROIT - The Green Bay Packers defeated division rival Detroit 47-23 in Detroit.  With the win, the Packers stay undefeated in division play.

Philadelphia Eagles @ Houston Texans

HOUSTON - The Houston Texans won a thriller 30-27 over the Philadelphia Eagles.  The game came down to a last second kick by Rodrigo Blankenship and Houston walked away with the W.

Thursday, November 3, 2022

2022 3GML Season - Week 8

San Francisco 49ers @ Los Angeles Rams

LOS ANGELES - In a battle of NFC West contenders, the San Francisco 49ers (7-1) took down the Los Angeles Rams 23-17 in overtime.  After getting out in front, the Rams (3-4) vaunted defense could not keep San Francisco from charging back.

Once in overtime, Justin Fields turned not to CeeDee Lamb or Tyler Boyd, but running back JD McKissic for a deep 60 yard pass.  To his credit McKissic went up and got the ball before running the rest of the way into the end zone for the game winning touchdown.  The sea of red and gold in the LA stands erupted after the play and the 49ers emerged as clear favorites to take the NFC North.

Once again Justin Fields had over 100 yards rushing and is proving difficult to stop.  He's the early front runner for MVP in the 3GML and could be the second player in league history to earn back to back honors.

San Francisco heads into their bye week with a comfortable 3 game lead in the division.

Tennessee Titans @ Houston Texans

HOUSTON - With Tennessee quarterback Ryan Tannehill out with injury, the Houston Texans cruised to a 34-10 victory over their division rivals.  Tennessee (4-3) was able to keep things close early but couldn't hang with the excellent Houston running game.  The Texans (5-2) had over 200 yards rushing on the day which kept the time of possession strongly in their favor.

The turning point took all of five seconds in the beginning of the 2nd quarter.  With the Texans up 6-3, Gardner Minshew found DeVante Parker on a 23 yard touchdown pass to put Houston up 13-3.  On the ensuing kickoff, the Texans forced a Dontrell Hillard fumble and turned it into a scoop and score.  Before they knew it, Tennessee was down 20-3 and could never catch up with backup quarterback Kyle Allen.

With the win, Houston takes a half game lead over Indianapolis in the AFC South.  They will look to keep that advantage next week as they take on the Eagles at home in Thursday Night Football.

Green Bay Packers @ Buffalo Bills

BUFFALO - The Buffalo Bills spoiled GM SD's return to New York with a thrilling 26-24 victory over the Green Bay Packers.  SD who brought Buffalo their first (and second) Super Bowl win, had to watch on in frustration as the Bills (4-3) used a Hail Mary and last minute field goal to hold off the visiting Packers.

Green Bay (5-2-1) came out hot with an opening touchdown drive but struggled to stop Josh Allen the rest of the night.  In spite of their struggles, Green Bay still found themselves in a tight one and only down 10-7 with one second to go in the second quarter.  However, with an arm like Allen's, no throw is too long.  The Buffalo QB rolled right on the last play of the half and heaved a 65 yard bomb to Gabe Davis in the back of the end zone, taking the air out of the Packers before half time.

To their credit, Green Bay hung around and actually took a late 24-23 lead.  However, Allen was left with too much time and drove down the field to set up what would be the game-winning field goal.

"The wings were great, the game sucked." GM SD said after the game.

Green Bay will stay on the road for the third straight week and head to Detroit to take on the 1-6 Lions.

2022 3GML Season - Week 7

Green Back Packers @ Washington Commanders

LANDOVER - The Green Bay Packers (5-1-1) walked away with an exciting 34-28 overtime win over the Washington Commanders (5-2) in quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's return.  The Packers looked in trouble early as Tagovailoa showed signs of rust and the run game was non-existent.  Heading into half, Green Bay found themselves down 21-3.  However, a uptempo pass attack in the second half allowed the Pack to use their weapons and climb back in it, including scoring 18 points in the 4th quarter.

Stefon Diggs caught 9 passes for 121 yards on the day and seemed to enjoy the pass-happy offense.

"This is what we're capable of," Diggs said.  "We have to open it up a bit.  No one is stopping all these weapons."

Washington won the coin toss and in overtime and hoped to erase the Packers hope with a scoring drive.  However, on the first play quarterback Taylor Heinicke was strip sacked by Haason Reddick and Lamarcus Joyner picked up the ball and ran it back for the game winning score.

After the game, Coach Matt LaFleur was asked about the change in offensive philosophy during the second half.

"Well, we were down and needed points quickly," LaFleur said.  "That always necessitates a change in game plan.  However, I liked what I saw and will keep that in mind as we move forward."

Could Offensive Coordinator Deuce Staley be in trouble?  We'll find out next week as Green Bay travels to Buffalo to take on Josh Allen and the Bills.

Houston Texans @ Las Vegas Raiders

LAS VEGAS - The Houston Texans found themselves on the wrong end of a big second quarter and fell 24-16 to the Las Vegas Raiders (2-5).  Houston's offense struggled to move the ball in this one but the defense kept things close most of the game.  However, the Raiders used a 17-point second quarter powered by Davante Adams to keep things out of reach for the Texans.  Adams, who finished with eight catches for 127 yards, proved to be the difference in this one.

For Houston, the loss coming out of the bye to a one win team stings.  The will try to right the ship next week as they take on the AFC leading Tennessee Titans.

Kansas City Chiefs @ San Francisco 49ers

SANTA CLARA - The San Francisco 49ers used three interceptions and pouring rain to fuel a 25-17 win over Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.  The rain in Santa Clara was strong all game and had obvious impacts on the game.  The 49ers (6-1) used it to their advantage, running Justin Fields most of the game.  The Chiefs (5-2), tried a different approach and continued their pass-heavy offense, throwing 43 times on the day.  That approach proved costly as a slippery ball and field led to the three interceptions by Mahomes.

JC Jackson, who had two of the interceptions (Derwin James had the other) showed he earned the contract GM CD gave him this offseason.  However, shortly after the second interception, Jackson was injured on a pass deflection and had to be carted off the field.  Early reports aren't looking promising and it's very possible San Francisco will be without him for a lengthy period of time.

With the win, San Francisco kept their firm grasp on first place in the NFC West.  They will now travel to Los Angeles to take on a familiar opponent in the Rams.

2022 3GML Season - Week 6

San Francisco 49ers @ Atlanta Falcons

ATLANTA - In a tale of two halves, the San Francisco 49ers held on to defeat the Atlanta Falcons 17-14.  The 49ers (5-1) came out hot in the first half and built a 17-0 lead.  However, the offense fell flat in the second half, letting the Falcons (2-4)  back into the game.

After two 4th-quarter Atlanta touchdowns, San Francisco found themselves in a high pressure situation.  However, a methodical drive down to the two-yard line ate up much of the clock forcing Atlanta to burn its timeouts.  The strategy almost worked as the Falcons forced a 4th and one situation.  Rather than kick the field goal to go up six and give Atlanta the ball back, Coach Kyle Shanahan opted to go for it and try to run our the clock.  The strategy worked as San Francisco picked us the first and ran out the clock.

"The numbers guys told me it was the way to go."  Shanahan said.

San Francisco now heads home to host the Kansas City Chiefs.

New York Jets @ Green Bay Packers

GREEN BAY - Down starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa another week, the Green Bay Packers struggled their way to a 13-13 tie with the winless New York Jets (0-5-1) in the pouring rain.  Backup duties went to Drew Lock this week and it was more of the same struggles as in week five.   Locke missed multiple open receivers and was unable to get the offense past mid-field most of the game.

"We have to be better," Coach Matt La Fleur said.  "At the end of the day, this was a home game against a winless opponent.  If we want to achieve our goals, this isn't going to cut it."

For Green Bay (4-1-1) it felt like they could have easily walked away with a win or a loss.  With time expiring in the 4th, Green Bay decided to kick the tying field goal on 1st and goal from the two with 11 seconds left rather than try and get one more play in.  However, on the other side, the New York defense dropped multiple potential interceptions off Lock in the rain.  A few of them that could have easily been pick-sixes.

"Man, it was like we had oven mitts on or something," Sauce Gardner said. "That ball was hard to hold on to, like a hot pocket fresh out of the oven."

Green Bay should have Tagovailoa back next week as they travel to take on the 5-1 Washington Commanders.

2022 3GML Season - Week 5

New York Giants @ Green Bay Packers

LONDON - The Green Bay Packers couldn't overcome the absence of starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and dropped their first game of the season 37-14 to the New York Giants (4-1).  Tagovailoa missed with a concussion and backups Sam Howell and Drew Lock both struggled in their play.

The Packers (4-1) will have to figure out a better plan next week as Tagovailoa doesn't appear likely to clear concussion protocol by Sunday.  Howell looked inexperienced throwing mutliple interceptions and taking unnecessary sacks, while Lock showed flashes but ultimately turned the ball over two times himself.

Coach Matt LaFleur stated, "We'll have to look at the tape and practice this week to see who we start if Tua can't go."

Regardless, look for a more run heavy offense as the Packers host the Jets in week six.

Houston Texans @ Jacksonville Jaguars

JACKSONVILLE - With Hurricane Ian working its way through Florida, the Houston Texans (4-1) outlasted the Jacksonville Jaguars 34-14.  Weather was the defining factor in this game as the teams saw gusts of up to 90 miles per hour.  The NFL was insistent that the teams get the game in before the hurricane arrived, but the Ian had other plans and the outer edge arrived early.

Jacksonville (1-5) looked unprepared to play in these conditions and surprisingly came out throwing the ball on a majority of plays.  This led to six interceptions from Trevor Lawrence and the inability for the Jaguars to stay close.

"I just call the plays that are called man," Lawrence said.  "You'll have to talk to coach on why we we throwing it with trees being uprooted outside."

Special teams were also severely impacted as punts into the wind traveled an average of less than ten yards.  The game was very reminiscent of the 2017 AFC Championship between the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets, often referred to as the Wind Bowl, where the teams were unable to punt with the ball traveling almost backwards once it was up in the air.

In this one, Coach David Shaw smartly played Malik Willis the entire game and used his legs to move the ball.  With the Texans relying on the quarterback's speed, they were able to minimize the wind and score points when they needed.

Willis, who ended with three rushing touchdowns for the Texans, said, "That was crazy, man.  I don't know if I've every playing in weather that bad.  Coach had a great game plan and I was just happy I could help our team get the W today."

Houston has their bye next week and will probably need the extra time to get dry after this one.

San Francisco 49ers @ Carolina Panthers

CHARLOTTE - The Carolina Panthers (1-4) continued their downward spiral as the visiting San Francisco 49ers dominated from start to finish, walking away with a 31-0 shutout.  The 49ers (4-1) again used the legs of quarterback Justin Fields, who rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns on the day.  Fantasy football owners everywhere are thrilled with the prospect of having additional running back stats on their roster as Fields is on pace to rush for over 1700 yards on the season.

Defensively, the 49ers held the Panthers to 243 yards of total offense and recorded six sacks on the day.  Four of those were by Brian Burns who is on pace for a breakout year in San Francisco.

"Just happy to help this team win," Burns said.  "Not sure I'd want to be on that Carolina team right now."

Word has already leaked that the Panthers plan to fire head coach Matt Rhule tomorrow and will look to start anew once again.

As for the 49ers, the stay in the AFC South next week as they take on the Atlanta Falcons.

2022 3GML Season - Week 4

Los Angeles Rams @ San Francisco 49ers

SANTA CLARA - The San Francisco 49ers lost their first game of the season Sunday to the visiting Los Angeles Rams (2-2).  The 49ers were hampered by two lost fumbles and a lack of points on offense as the Rams did just enough to walk away with the 17-10 win.

The Niners (3-1) had a chance late to try and tie things up after a rarely-called pass interference on a Hail Mary gave them the ball on the 10 yard line with one second left.  Justin Fields, who has been electric with his legs all year, took off on a scramble and was tackled on the one yard line, denying San Francisco the chance for overtime.

The 49ers will try to get back on track next week against the Carolina Panthers.

Los Angeles Chargers @ Houston Texans

HOUSTON - The Houston Texans used a stifling defense and timely offense to take down the Los Angeles Chargers 22-17 in week four.  The Texans (3-1) kept Justin Herbert from getting in rhythm all game but mixing up coverages and forcing the Chargers (2-2) to take short completions.  The few times Herbert tried to force things down field, he found himself intercepted or the receiver blanketed in coverage.

"Trying to lean on the strength of this team," Coach David Shaw said.  "We know they have a special quarterback over there but this defensive unit was ready and I'd put them up against anyone."

Offensively, Houston did just enough and rode the hot hand of Gardner Minshew in the second half to keep things out of reach.  After four weeks, it appears that the Texans have the offensive line they desperately need with two unproven quarterbacks to protect.  Minshew was able to throw from a clean pocket most of the day and had plenty of time to connect with his receivers down field.

Houston will look to keep pace in the AFC next week when it takes on the Jacksonville Jaguars.

New England Patriots @ Green Bay Packers

GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers (4-0) stayed undefeated after taking down the injured New England Patriots 17-9 Sunday in Green Bay.  New England (1-3) was down starting quarterback Mac Jones after an ankle injury last week and turned to rookie Bailey Zappe who was starting his first NFL game.

The Packer defense was stout in this one, forcing Zappe to throw the ball away all afternoon.  When Zappe did throw it in play, the corner-duo of Casey Hayward and Patrick Surtain II made life difficult, forcing three interceptions (two by Hayward and one by Surtain).

"Never heard of the guy, Billy Zabka? Is that his name?" said Hayward. "Anyway, no matter who it is, rookie or Tom Brady, our mantra is 'No Mercy.'"

Not everything was a positive after the game, though, as the Packers learned quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered a concussion and his outlook for next week is doubtful.

"Just an unfortunate situation," Coach Matt LaFleur said. "As he was getting tackled, a player swept his leg and he fell awkwardly."

The Packers will have to rally their quarterback room quickly as they head to London next week to take on the New York Giants.  LaFleur has already indicated that rookie Sam Howell will get the start if Tagovailoa can't go.

"I'll be ready. They're going to have to take me out in a body bag to stop me from playing." Howell said.

2022 3GML Season - Week 3

San Francisco 49ers @ Denver Broncos

DENVER - The San Francisco 49ers overcame a shaky passing attack to stay undefeated and upset the Denver Broncos 34-21 at Mile High.  Denver (1-2) looked to be in the driver seat early when Rasul Douglas intercepted Justin Fields and took it back for an early touchdown.  However, the 49ers (3-0) didn't rattle and used a strong run game and defense to take control, scoring 17 unanswered before halftime.  From there, they held on and still remain in the driver's seat in the NFC West.

Justin Fields looked human for the first time this year, throwing two interceptions and only amassing 239 yards in air.  However, his legs kept the chains moving and at the end of the day, it was enough.

"I'll look at the tape and see where I can get better.  It's easier to go back and look at your mistakes after a win." Fields said.

San Francisco heads home next week to host the Los Angeles Rams.

Green Bay Packers @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers

TAMPA BAY - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers blew a 17-0 lead against the Green Bay Packers, losing 20-17 in overtime.  Tampa Bay (2-1) came out hot and Tom Brady was on-point as the Buccaneers built an early lead.  However, the Packers (3-0) defense, led by second-year corner Patrick Surtain II kept the game from getting away.  Surtain II was elite, allowing zero receptions with multiple pass break ups and two interceptions.

"Patrick is a top corner in the league." Coach Matt LaFleur said. "Watch the tape, then watch it again slowly.  All-Pro out there."

With the game still within striking distance, running back James Robinson moved the chains and scored early in the 3rd quarter to get Green Bay back on track.  After tying things up late in the 4th, Green Bay lost the coin toss in overtime.  With Brady and the offense moving the ball, things look dire for the Pack.  However, Quinnen Williams broke through the line for a huge sack and got his team the ball back.  From there, the offense was able to move the ball into range for Jason Sanders who kicked the winning field goal.

Green Bay will try to stay undefeated next week agains the New York Football Giants.

Houston Texans @ Chicago Bears

CHICAGO - The Houston Texans created quarterback controversy once again after seemingly settling the issue last week.  Malik Willis started against the Chicago Bears (0-3) after playing the majority of the game in week two.  This time, however, he struggled in hurricane-like conditions throwing two back-breaking interceptions; one for a pick six and the other with his team on the one yard line looking to score.

Coach David Shaw had seen enough and turned to Gardner Minshew the last two and a half quarters.  Minshew was much better and got the Texans (2-1) back into the game.  The Texans defense was able to shut down a rudderless Bears offense, used multiple turnovers of their own, and walk out with a 27-24 victory.

Those thinking Minshew earned the starting job himself, were reminded this isn't going to be so cut and dry as Minshew threw his own pick six keeping the Bears in the game.  It appears the Texans may have to play the hot hand each week moving forward even if that hand is lukewarm.

Houston will need a better performance at the position next week as they face the 3-0 Los Angeles Chargers.

2022 3GML Season - Week 2

Seattle Seahawks @ San Francisco 49ers

SAN FRANCISCO - The San Francisco 49ers (2-0) took down their division rival Seattle 33-10 in their week two matchup.  Once again quarterback Justin Fields accounted for the majority of the 49ers offense with 109 yards rushing and 230 yards in the air.

Seattle (0-2) never got things going offensively against the mighty Niners defense, only amassing 190 yards of total offense.  Cam Newton threw three interceptions, one each to Thomas Graham, Derwin James, and C.J. Garner-Johnson and it was clear Seattle has a ways to go before they will be competing for division titles again.

San Francisco looks to stay hot against former division rival Russell Wilson and his new team, the Denver Broncos.

Houston Texans @ Denver Broncos

DENVER - The defending Super Bowl champions got back on track with a week two win on the road in Denver.  Houston (1-1) looked very much in trouble offensively throughout the first half as both Malik Willis and Gardner Minshew struggled to move the ball.  However, a superb effort from the Texans defense led by Travis Gibson, kept the Broncos (1-1) to only 10 points.

Gibson had perhaps the play of the game on Denver's first drive.  With the Broncos looking ready to score on a third and goal, Gibson took the ball out of running back Javonte William's arms and secured it for the Texans.

"I've never seen anything like it," said defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn.  "He just stole the ball like it was basketball or something.  It never hit the ground.  That was a grown man play right there."

After a fiery speech from David Shaw at half time, the Texans scored 17 unanswered points in the 3rd quarter and never looked back, winning 24-10.

After a week of speculation, the world got the first glimpse of a Malik Willis led offense.  Willis started the game and played roughly 90% of the snaps.  In his time under center, Willis showed the raw talent that led the Texans selecting him in the 2nd round.  However, he also showed there will be some growing pains as he learns to play the position in the NFL.  Houston will take the bumps in the road as the flashes they saw Sunday should give them hope for the future.

Willis will continue his journey next week against the Chicago Bears who just lost Trey Lance for the season with a broken ankle.

Chicago Bears @ Green Bay Packers

GREEN BAY - The oldest rivalry in the NFL lived up to its hype in a thrilling Sunday night game between the Bears and Packers.  Tied 24-24 with under two minutes to go, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa led the Packers (2-0) down the field and running back James Robinson punched in the winning touchdown giving Green Bay the 31-24 victory.

For the Bears (0-2), it was a disappointing loss both on the field and for their season as quarterback Trey Lance was carted off the field with a broken ankle and will need season-ending surgery.

For the Packers, the offense seems to be clicking and stopping the three-headed monster of Stefon Diggs, Justin Jefferson, and Amon-Ra St. Brown will be a tall order for any defense.  The Packers arguably have three of the top ten receivers in the league on their roster and can drop back to pass in confidence knowing at least one will always get open.  The Bears struggled to stop this trio and had to pick their poison on defense all night.

Green Bay is at the top looking down on three 0-2 teams in their division.  The cushion will be nice as they face a tall order next week with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

2022 3GML Season - Week 1

San Francisco 49ers @ Chicago Bears

CHICAGO - The defending NFC champions picked up where they left off last year with a complete annihilation of the Chicago Bears (0-1).  San Francisco (1-0) weathered the literal and figurative storms early and walked away with a 36-7 victory at Soldier Field.

With pounding rain and strong winds creating difficult field conditions, 49er quarterback Justin Fields threw an interception on his first pass attempt, setting up Chicago's only scoring drive.  However, after the early mistake, Fields locked in and the 49ers looked every part of NFC contender they have been predicted to be.  Fields used his arm (20-27, 232 yds, 2 TDs, INT) and legs (15 rushes, 120 yds) to keep the ball moving while the San Francisco defense kept the Bears offense in disarray.  Trey Lance finished with an abysmal 41.5 quarterback rating (13-29, 135 yds, TD, 2 INT) for the Bears.

The narrative all week has been about the quarterbacks  Early rumors in the 2021 NFL Draft had San Francisco debating between Trey Lance and Justin Fields.  GM CD ultimately selected Fields while Lance fell to Chicago.  In the first matchup between the two first round picks, Fields justified his selection, while Lance had Bears fans wondering if they missed on another first round quarterback.

San Francisco heads back west for their home opener next week as they take on division rival Seattle.

Green Bay Packers @ Minnesota Vikings

MINNEAPOLIS - The Green Bay Packers (1-0) used a major second half adjustment to score 38 unanswered  points and roll the Minnesota Vikings 38-10.  The Vikings (0-1) looked ready to run away with things early, forcing three interceptions by Tua Tagovailoa and a fumble by Amon Ra St. Brown.  However, the Minnesota offense was only able to muster 10 points, and as a result, Green Bay was never out of it.

A steady diet of running the ball with James Robinson (96 yds, TD) allowed Tagovailoa to find his groove and the Packers scored touchdowns on their next four drives.

"Happy to be back out there," Robinson said referencing his season ending with an Achilles tear last year.  "We knew with this team, we're never out of it."

Not to be forgotten was the stellar play of the Green Bay defense who kept the Pack in the game despite the early turnovers.  The Vikings were held to 157 total yards of offense on the day thanks in large part to Patrick Surtain II who prevented Kirk Cousins from finding his number one option most of the afternoon.  When Minnesota looked to finally be moving the ball, Surtain shut things down again with a pick-six to put the game out of reach.

The Packers head home to take on another division foe in the Chicago Bears Sunday night.

Indianapolis Colts @ Houston Texans

HOUSTON - The defending Super Bowl Champions quest to repeat got off to a rough start as the Houston Texans (0-1) fell 20-7 to the Indianapolis Colts (1-0).  The Texans offense could never really get things going as they alternated between Gardner Minshew and Malik Willis at quarterback.  The two QB system worked wonders for coach David Shaw last year but wasn't effective this game.

Quarterback Matt Ryan impressed in his new uniform, throwing for 214 yards and a touchdown on a 83% completion percentage.  The Texans defense just could get Ryan and company off the field when they needed.

Rumors are already swirling of a shakeup with play calling duties after the Texans offense struggled all game.  With an elite slate of AFC teams, the urgency for Houston to not fall behind early is real. One popular rumor is that Coach David Shaw will take control of the offense from OC Pep Hamilton and let Hamilton focus on developing the young QB Willis.  No official word yet on a change, but it will likely be the focus of Shaw's media session next week.

Houston will look to bounce back next week when they travel to Denver to take on the Broncos.

2022 3GML Training Camp Update

August 3rd, 2022 - Let's take a look at the early stories out of each 3GML training camp.

HOUSTON - The defending champions started camp last week and there are a number of stories we're paying attention to.

1. Did the Texans do enough this offseason to repeat? - One of the biggest stories in the NFL was the massive talent acquisition that occurred throughout the AFC.  From Russell Wilson to Davante Adams to Khalil Mack, the AFC became much deeper and as a result, the path for Houston to get back to the Super Bowl became that much tougher.  The Texans added some key players in Donte Jackson, Grady Jarrett, Jesse Bates and La'el Collins; but were these pieces enough?  Time will tell.  Complicating matters is the schedule.  Houston has to run through the AFC West this season, which is easily the toughest division in all of football.

2. What will Houston do at quarterback? - Houston got a combined MVP effort out of Andy Dalton and Gardner Minshew last season.  Their two quarterback system surprisingly worked as each QB was able to hide the other's flaws.  The Texans likely realized they caught lightning in a bottle and drafted the electric Malik Willis in the second round of this year's draft.  What will Houston do this year?  Early reps out of camp seem to be split between Wills and Minshew with Dalton seeing only 2nd team snaps.  When asked about the starting quarterback job, coach David Shaw was coy, only stating he has three quarterbacks he trusts.

SAN FRANCISCO - The 49ers were runners up last season and are looking to take that one last step this year.  Here is what we're monitoring out of camp.

1. What is going to happen with Alvin Kamara? - The all everything running back for the Niners was involved in a fight at a Vegas night club this offseason and is awaiting his trial.  The NFL is monitoring the situation closely and it's very possible a suspension is on the table.  If he ends up missing significant time, his absence will obviously be felt by this run first offense.  GM CD likely read the writing on the wall and signed JD McKissic in the event Kamara misses time.

2. Will Justin Fields take a leap in year two? - The co-MVP definitely showed what he was capable of last season, carrying his team to the Super Bowl in his first year.  However, Fields also showed his inexperience with a three interception performance in that game.  This team was most effective when the run game was clicking.  When Fields was asked to carry the load himself, they struggled.  Where will things go?  Most coaches will agree that year two is where you see a big leap for NFL QBs.  If that pattern holds true for Fields, San Francisco fans will be in for another deep playoff run.

GREEN BAY - After their quest to repeat as champions was soundly put to bed by a playoff thrashing, the Packers look to regroup and bring the Lombardi back home.  Here's the top two questions coming out of training camp.

1. Did Green Bay really fix its weaknesses at offensive tackle? - The Packers O-line unit struggled to protect its young quarterback last year and the team ultimately paid the price for it.  As a result GM SD spent a significant amount of money to bring in tackles Terron Armstead and Trent Brown.  On paper these are significant upgrades.  However, the injury history of both could leave the Packers in the same exact spot they were last year.  If both can stay healthy, Green Bay looks to run away with the NFC North.  If not, we never get to see what Tua Tagovailoa could become.

2. Will Tua Tagovailoa develop into a franchise quarterback? - No quarterback elicits such polarizing opinions as the Green Bay signal caller.  You either think he's a bust or talented young player who just hasn't had the protection needed to thrive.  Either way, we're going to find out this season.  Best case scenario, Tagovailoa thrives in year three and Green Bay makes a run at a title.  Worst case?  Tua's struggles continue even with a better supporting cast and GM SD uses his three first round picks to try and find the next franchise QB.

Best Draft Picks By 3GML GMs

Today we are going to break down the best draft picks by position among the GMs of the 3GML.  For this exercise, we will be considering the following factors in determining the best picks.

  1. Draft position - Sure, hitting on a player with the number one overall pick is easy.  We expect that player to be good.  Finding an elite player in round 4?  That is the recipe for a great draft pick.
  2. Player production - Draft success is determined by on-field success.  We are looking for difference makers on the field.
  3. Positional draft position - Where was a player taken in relation to others who play the same position?  A GM looks better when he grabbed a player who ended up being better than others picked ahead of him.
To summarize, we aren't looking for the best player drafted, we are looking for the best pick at each position.  We will be looking at the entire history of the 3GML, including previous teams and GMs.  Let's begin.

Quarterback - Lamar Jackson (2018 - Round 1, pick 15) - GM TH
This may go down as one of the best grabs in 3GML history due to the value of the quarterback position.  GM TH watched Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, and Josh Rosen go off the board before getting his guy at 15.  Other than Allen, Jackson has been heads and tails above the QBs picked ahead of him.  In his time in the league, Jackson has been an All-Pro, two-time Pro-Bowler, and was named the 2019 MVP.  He is considered a franchise QB and not too many GMs can say they drafted one of those.

Running Back - Derrick Henry (2016 - Round 2, pick 41) - GM TH
Another pick to GM TH.  Henry has been all-everything for the Titans, single-handedly carrying their offense over the past few years.  He has two Pro Bowls, an All-Pro, and Offensive Player of the Year Award under his belt as well as a 2,000 yard season.  Once again, not many GMs can say they drafted a 2,000 yard rusher as there are only eight all time.  While only Ezekiel Elliott was picked ahead of Henry in the draft, GM TH got a better and longer-lasting back 37 picks later.

Tight End - George Kittle (2017 - Round 3, pick 102) - GM EP
There really wasn't much competition for this position, but even if there was, EP still would have won.  It's hard to imagine a better tight end pick than Kittle when you consider his production and where he was selected.  Kittle was the sixth tight end taken in 2017, after players like OJ Howard, David Njoku, Evan Engram, Adam Shaheen, and Jonnu Smith.  He has been to three pro-bowls and earned one All Pro nomination.  He even held the record for most yards by a tight end for two seasons before the record was broken in 2020.  Overall, this will likely go down as GM EPs best draft pick ever.

Wide Receiver - Justin Jefferson (2020 - Round 1, pick 18) - GM SD
GM SD gets on the board with the electric receiver who more receiving yards than any player prior to tuning 23 as well as the most yards every through two pro seasons.  He's been to two Pro Bowls and is widely considered to be a top five receiver in the league heading into only his third year.  While it's too early to tell how the careers of the receivers picked ahead of him (CeeDee Lamb and Jerry Jeudy) play out, it appears Jefferson will be the crown jewel receiver of this class.

Center - Creed Humphrey (2021 - Round 3, pick 66) - GM EP
While on the more recent side of draft picks on this list, Humphrey's inclusion is well deserved.  Considered among the best in the game after only his rookie year, GM EP hit a home run grabbing an impact player in round three.  Humphrey anchored the interior of a revamped Chiefs offensive line and looks to be a future All-Pro.

Guard - Quenton Nelson (2018 - Round 1, pick 6) - GM SD
This is a situation where the on-field performance is so resounding, it tips the scales against other quality players picked later in the draft.  Nelson is a top, if not the top, guard in the game.  A three-time All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowler, Nelson has all the individual hardware you'd expect from a player of his stature.  As the best player on a stacked Colts offensive line, he stands out to the average NFL fan on film, which is saying a lot considering the position he plays.

Tackle - Orlando Brown (2018 - Round 3, pick 79) - GM TH
There were a fair amount of tackles to consider for this pick.  Most, however, were nothing to write home about.  The one who stood out well ahead of the rest?  Orlando Brown.  After a poor performance at the combine, Brown tumbled down most team's draft boards.  GM TH used this to his advantage and snagged the Oklahoma product in the middle of the third round.  What makes this pick look even better is the fact Brown was the eighth (!!) tackle selected in 2018.  Brown has already been to three Pro Bowls and recently completed a successful move to the left side of the line.

Defensive Line - Alim McNeill (2021 - Round 3, pick 75) - GM EP
Another class of 2021 draft pick for GM EP.  To be honest, this may have been the toughest position to select as the body of work from the 3GML general managers is not strong.  Regardless, McNeill has the potential to break that trend.  He is considered a breakout candidate by many heading into year two and if that comes to fruition, the value at pick 75 will be high.

Edge - Myles Garrett (2017 - Round 1, pick 1) - GM SD
Another instance where the player's impact transcends other players picked later.  Edge rusher had some other great candidates including Brian Burns and Harold Landry, but Burns was a high 1st round pick like Garrett and Landry only broke out last year.  Garrett will be in the running for defensive player of the year for the foreseeable future and already has two All-Pro nods and three Pro Bowls in his trophy case.  The other consideration here; rarely does a number one overall pick live up to the hype.  Garrett has done that in spades.

Linebacker - Anthony Walker (2017 - Round 5, pick 152) - GM SD
Coming in as the lowest pick on our list, Walker has been a reliable presence during his six years in the league.  Overshadowed by Darious Leonard during his time in Indianapolis, Walker has become the captain of the Browns defense.  While some injuries have crept up the past two seasons, the combination of a reliable starter picked so late in the draft gives GM SD this crown.

Cornerback - Jalen Ramsey (2016 - Round 1, pick 3) - GM TH
The best corner in the game, period.  Ramsey has persisted as an elite player who has not shown signs of slowing down just yet.  A three-time All-Pro with five Pro Bowls and a Super Bowl under his belt, Ramsey is building a Hall of Fame resume.  This was GM TH's first 3GML pick and will likely go down as one of the best picks he ever made.

Safety - Derwin James (2018 - Round 1, pick 13) - GM CD
GM CD gets on the list with the electric James.  Injuries over the course of his career made this call closer than it would have been otherwise, but the talent is undeniable.  Even with his shortened seasons, James has managed to be name to an All Pro team and make two Pro Bowls.  GM CD gets points for  being ahead of the curve by picking a hybrid matchup defender who can line up in the box and also cover the new more athletic tight ends.

Kicker/Punter - Michael Dickson (2018 - Round 4, pick 128) - GM CD
Drafting a punter or kicker is usually frowned upon in NFL circles, but GM CD definitely hit with this pick.  Dickson is a field-flipper who keeps the Seahawks in games they don't belong in by making opposing offenses traverse the length of the field.  Dickson has been named an All Pro and any time you can say you drafted a player in that category, it's a win regardless of position.

2022 Consensus Big Board Draft Grades

The 2022 draft happened.  Yes, that is how I chose to start this article.  I cannot think of a draft class that I was less excited by since I’ve started following the NFL draft closely.  Outside of a handful of top players, the 2022 class was full of players selected well ahead of where they would have gone in an average draft class.  Perhaps this was the “aftershock” of COVID-19 and the shake up that it caused to NCAA to NFL matriculation.  Next year looks to be a bounce back year.

With that said, bad draft classes make for fun draft grading, and this year is no different.  I watched in disbelief this year as NFL teams eschewed value more than ever and all for the sake of drafting players they tabbed as “their guys”.  As one might expect, wiser teams reaped value in this draft and this article will show just how well, or how poorly, NFL front offices performed.

The Consensus Big Board

For two years now, I’ve used The Athletic’s Consensus Big Board as a tool to establish draft prospects’ Estimated Draft Pick (EDP) and, in combination with Jimmy Johnson draft trade chart and positional weighting, draft value.  As a refresher, the Consensus Big Board (CBB) is an aggregation of numerous big boards posted by NFL draft analysts and media compiled by Arif Hasan of The Athletic.  The board is divided into the 3 versions: Forecaster Board, Evaluator Board, and Consensus Board, where:

“one type of analyst, the ‘forecasters,’ tend to have much more access to NFL and college personnel, which gives them information about injury concerns, character, off-field issues and behind-the-scenes information that could change our understanding of a player one way or the other. The other group, the ‘evaluators,’ rely on public data — primarily college game film and advanced statistics.” (Arif Hasan, The Athletic)

Hasan suggests the Forecaster Board better reflects the actual draft than the Evaluator Board, while the Evaluator Board is better at projecting NFL success.  The Consensus Big Board, a combination of both the Forecaster and Evaluator Boards, is ideally the best of both worlds.

To verify, I plotted the 3 boards against actual 2022 NFL draft picks (figure below).  Once again, the Forecaster board topped the other 2 boards by posting an r2 = 0.67, which also matches the 2021 Forecaster Board performance.   Despite the lesser marks, the Consensus and Evaluator boards both improved from last year (r= 0.61 to 0.62 and r= 0.58 to 0.6 respectively)

While the Forecaster Board once again proved the better predictor, I chose to stick with the Consensus Board for player grades, which is consistent with the previous two articles.  Based on Hasan’s analysis of the past CBB, the Evaluator board is a better predictor of NFL success anyhow, so placing too much weight on the Forecaster board may not the best way to grade draft performance.

Weighting the Grades

Last year, I introduced positional weighting to the CBB draft grades by taking the average of the top 5 salaries at each position group and dividing those values by the median of all top 5 positional salaries (for more details see: http://3gml.blogspot.com/2021/05/3gml-2021-consensus-big-board-draft.html).  As I discussed previously, this circumvented issue with using the franchise tag as weighting, since edge rushers are either lumped in with LB or DE depending on scheme.  I created a separate “Edge” class, which includes all true pass rushers, while 3-4 DE are included with 3-4 NT and 4-3 interior DL in the class “DT”.  I also lumped all interior offensive linemen in one group since there is less distinction between G and C prospects versus tackle and interior o-line prospects.  Lastly, kickers, punters, and long snappers are all included in the Special Teams “ST” class.  Both the 2021 and 2022 Positional Weights are included in the tables and figure below for comparison.

It is immediately clear there are some changes between last year and this year.  Given this offseason, one might have anticipated the meteoric growth in both QB and WR top 5 salaries.  We can thank the Browns and Jaguars respectively for resetting the market at those positions.  Edge also increased, but was supplanted by WR as the number 2 most valued position in the NFL.  Like last year, LB, IOL, S, RB, TE, and ST were all less valued positions, but safety overtook IOL in 2022.  Relative to QB and WR, all but LB saw a decrease in weighting.  LB saw an increase due the market reset from the Fred Warner and Darius Leonard contracts.

The one position that still remains a headscratcher is cornerback.  The top 2022 free agent corner, JC Jackson, signed for a below top 5 salary at the position.  For whatever reason, the CB market has not been reset since the Jalen Ramsey contract (although the Browns recently extended Denzel Ward to a contract that tops Ramsey’s APY by a whopping $100k).  Yes, he arguably remains at the top of his position by performance, but since when has that stopped teams from signing lesser players to bigger contracts at other positions? As you will see below, this will have implications for the weighted CBB grades.

Overall Team Performance

Using the positional weights, the overall CBB draft grades are presented in the figure below. This year, instead of assigning a GPA, I graded on a “curve” function based on the top Consensus Grade (0.6) and average grade (0.0).  This I felt resulted in a better distribution of grades than in the past, which tended to be too top heavy (i.e. too nice).  Since the methodology for this year’s grading remained the same, I thought I’d dedicate more time discussing the grade results that in previous articles.  Below, I’ve included some commentary on my reactions to the CBB grades.

CBB Grade Reactions

Strongest Affirmation: Baltimore Ravens - A+

Plain and simple, the Baltimore Ravens nailed the draft and it shouldn’t be a surprise.  They are the masters at waiting and letting good players fall to them year in and year out, and the CBB agrees.  This year, a top 5 player in Kyle Hamilton and a top 15 player in Tyler Linderbaum fell in the Raven’s laps, both at 10 picks below their respective CBB rankings.  Throw in Ojabo at 45 (ranked 29 on the CBB), Travis Jones at 76 (ranked 40 on the CBB) and Faalele at 110 (ranked 60 on the CBB), and this was a historically good draft by the Ravens (at least with what we know now).  While I have questions about Linderbaum’s fit in the Ravens scheme (not to mention the irony of taking a center with 1 percentile wingspan and 5 percentile weight historically vs a tackle in Faalele with 96 percentile wingspan and 99 percentile weight), I don’t doubt their ability to make it work.  An “A+” for the consistently top-of-the-class student.

Biggest Disagreement: Houston Texans - F

I did a double take when I saw this.  I wouldn’t say I thought the Texans won the draft, but I certainly didn’t think they belonged in the same breath as the Jaguars and Patriots.  Taking a closer look, this is case of 1) the Texans ranking players higher than the CBB, and 2) spending top 150 capital on positions of lesser value.  They took all but LB Christian Harris higher than the CBB rankings, and they spent picks 15, 37, 75, and 107 on an interior offensive linemen, safety, LB, and RB.  But they also got nailed by the Stingley pick, which, frankly, highlights a glaring weakness of a purely quantitative method for grading (I can already hear the Twitterverse shouting, “That’s right, nerd!”).  The Texans selected Stingley at 3, and he was ranked 7th on the CBB, largely due to the concerns over his health.  Not a soul thought that was a reach, but the value jump from 3 to 7 is 700 points (equivalent to pick 26) on the JJ chart, and the CBB graded accordingly.  If Stingley stays healthy, this will likely go down as the worst draft grade in history, but if not… well, we will see.  Regardless, the grade did prompt me to ask, “what if they hadn’t taken Stingley at 3?”  With needs across the board, the Texans could have gone with any position at both of their first round picks.  So I recalculated the grades by substituting what I might have done for the Texans at picks 3 and 15 (since Green at 15 also received a poor grade) using only players that were available at those picks Thursday night.  I selected OT Evan Neal at 3 and CB Trent McDuffie at 15.  I chose Neal over Ekwonu or Edge Kayvon Thibodeaux because he has a high floor and could play either RT or G for them immediately.  At 15, McDuffie filled the CB need and is arguably a better fit to Lovie Smith’s Tampa 2 scheme than Stingley, who should be put on an island in a press-man scheme.  Essentially, this is the reverse of what the Texans actually did with CB at pick 3 and OL at pick 15. The result:

This begs the question:  would you rather have Stingley and Green or Neal and McDuffie?  It probably all hinges on whether Stingley reaches his All-Pro ceiling, but it is interesting food for thought.

Better than Expected: Carolina Panthers - A

Beating up on the Panthers is the latest media hobby.  The complete failure of trading a 2021 6th, 2022 2nd, and 2022 4th for Sam “Sixth Sense” Darnold, and then letting both Justin Fields and Mac Jones slide past them in last year’s draft, has increased the temperature setting from “Keep Warm” to “Broil” on the seats of Rhule and Fitterer (justifiably).  But instead of panicking and over-drafting a QB at 6 this year, they made an oddly sagacious pick with OT Ikem Ekwonu, addressing a position that has long been a need for the Panthers.  Then, they patiently waited (and we can argue whether the “wait” was actually due to the fact they had zero picks on day 2 thanks to Darnold) until the NFL game of “Draft a QB Chicken” played out to trade up a grab a QB.  Now, was Corral a better choice than Howell?  Well apparently the NFL thought so given that Howell waited another round and a half to hear his name called.  Regardless, good value at prime positions with Neal and Corral equals good grades on the CBB.

Worse than Expected: New York Jets - B

Personally, I really liked the Jets draft and had them second to Baltimore.   Getting Sauce at 4, Wilson at 10, and trading back up to get Jermaine Johnson at 26 was a slam dunk 1st round.  Then, they snagged a perfect scheme fit in Jeremy Ruckert at pick 101.  However, the CBB only gave them a “B”.  Much like Houston, the Jets got dinged for taking Sauce at 4 when the CBB had other players like Neal, Thibs, and Ekwonu ranked higher.  But Sauce is a perfect scheme fit and fills a position of (dire) need, so we will ignore the bad grade there.  Picking an RB at 36 was the next poorly graded move and this time I can’t say I disagree.  Hall went only a pick before the CBB ranking, but RB is not valued in today’s NFL so the pick resulted in a negative grade.  I understand the pick, but considering the Jets took Michael Carter last year and have enough question marks at other positions, we can argue that other players at more impactful positions were still available at pick 36.  RB simply could have waited as the CBB grade suggests.  Either way, I don’t think the New York Jets really care.

Biggest Surprise: Buffalo Bills - D+

Outside of Kaiir Elam, I honestly didn’t notice the Bills draft.  Typically, that means the draft was average – neither outstanding nor deplorable.  The CBB grade disagrees.  Elam was ranked 30th on the CBB and the Bills traded up to 23 to get him, which, while a plus position, still resulted in a poor grade (we are seeing a trend here with CB…).  Then, they took RB James Cook at 63, whereas the CBB had him ranked nearly a full round lower (89th).  Reaching for a non-premium position is surefire way to get a bad grade, and the remainder of their draft was filled with reaches vs the CBB rankings (outside of WR Khalil Shakir).  Surprising? I thought so, but when you look at the CBB grades for other contenders, such as the Bengals and Buccaneers, you can see that reaching for players at positions of need is often luxury (or mistake?) of contenders in the NFL.

3GML Breakout

Moving from the NFL to 3GML, I took a closer look at each 3GML team pick and UDFA selection (all UDFA were ascribed pick 263 to keep it even between teams).  Each team is discussed below with best value, worst value, and overall grade discussed.  As with the curved grades in the previous section, I did not factor in value for trades, assuming that the move up or down accounted for the value of the new pick.  Therefore, when I say “original pick value,” I mean the value of the final picks for each team.

Green Bay Packers

Best Value: QB Sam Howell

The most premium of premium positions is QB and snagging a QB rounds after his CBB ranking is a pure value pick.  Still, GM SD surprised many by selecting UNC QB Sam Howell at 136.  However, with incumbent QB Tua in a prove-it year and backup Drew Lock on the outs, this was a low-risk, high-upside pick.  Howell likes to take shots down the field, but struggled in 2021 when most of his supporting cast exited for the NFL.  Now he has landed in the frozen tundra with Green Bay, who has the WR corps to take advantage of Howell’s game.  We may be talking about this pick as the steal of the draft in the years to come.

Worst Value: Trent McDuffie

CB and the CBB strikes again.  This actually isn’t even a negative grade based on the Consensus board, but it is the Packers’ lowest graded pick.  GM SD selected McDuffie right where he was valued, so it is not so much a bad value pick but rather illustrates how much value he got later in the draft.  McDuffie is a stud who will compete for the slot role in Green Bay’s defense day 1.  The only questions is whether his measurable will limit him to the slot and limit his ceiling (fun fact: only one CB in the last 5 years with <31” arms has made the Pro Bowl… 3GML Packers Casey Hayward).

Overall Grade: A

GM SD finds good value in another draft and finishes with the 3rd overall grade.  Even with the luxury of 3 first round picks (one traded for a 2023 1st rounder in what was a very wise move), GM SD didn’t reach and achieved 142.7% of his draft picks original value.  Not a single pick received a negative grade and GM SD still managed to fill a number of holes on his roster.  The perennial playoff contender remains a threat to the NFC.

Houston Texans

Best Pick: QB Malik Willis

GM TH considered drafting a QB at pick 32, but instead traded back and still got the 2nd QB off the board with Malik Willis.  For some reason beyond comprehension, Willis wouldn’t hear his name called until a round later in real life, but GM TH shouldn’t mind.  He got one the best values in the entire draft by selecting Willis 17 picks later than he was ranked.  Willis landed in the perfect situation with the Houston Texans, where he can sit and learn behind Dalton (the Mentor) and Minshew (the Gunslinger).  He may be competing for the starting position by this time next year.

Worst Value: P Matt Araiza

Drafting a specialist, even one nicknamed “Punt God”, will always be ranked poorly by the CBB.  Specialists just aren’t paid like a premium position and that drags this grade down for GM TH.  However, Araiza went to the Bills in real life, who struggled with punting last year, so he has a shot to be the starter by week 1.

Overall Grade: A+

Every year GM TH finds insane value in the draft and this year is no different.  He achieved 230.9% of his original pick value, shattering the record previously held by the (real) Buffalo Bills in 2020 (215.67%).  Once again, GM TH finishes the draft with the 2nd highest grade, barely topped (by decimal points) by the insanely good Ravens draft.  The bar remains high for 3GML teams.

San Francisco 49ers

Best Value: Edge Kingsley Enagbare

GM CD was surprised to see Enagbare last all the way to pick 139 (and beyond in real life), and gladly snatched up the versatile edge defender.  Enagbare slipped due to average testing, but was a productive player for the Gamecocks and will provide much needed depth behind Brian Burns and Bradley Chubb for San Francisco.  This was simply a “too good of value” pick.

Worst Value: OT Zach Tom

Zach Tom was one the players ranked all over the place.  GM CD saw him ranked as high as the late 2nd and as low as the 5th.  When OC Dylan Parham was snatched up only 5 selections before the 49ers first 3rd round pick, GM CD traded up to make sure he didn’t miss out on another scheme fit.  Trading up often equates to bad value in the CBB and a low Consensus ranking for Tom drove it down further.  If Tom, who landed in an excellent spot in real life, blossoms as a developmental player, this grade will be an afterthought.

Overall: B-

Over the last 2 years, GM CD hasn’t shied away from aggressively drafting players who fit the 49ers scheme.  Unfortunately, scheme fit isn’t accounted for in the CBB (at least yet…) and while GM CD still managed to get 139.5% of his original pick value, the 49ers were still left with a B-.  At 13th overall, the 49ers finished outside of the top 10 in draft grades for the second year in a row.

Conclusion

Another year, another successful draft for the 3GML league.  This year, the CBB grades reinforced some qualitative assessments by those around the media, but also resulted in some puzzling grades.  The continued undervaluing of cornerback by the NFL exposed a flaw in the average top 5 salary weighting method.  Next year, I hope to correct for that by 1) developing a new quantitative method for weighting positional value, and/or 2) developing a quantitative metric to account for scheme fit.  I’ve already started working on item 2 and hope to make progress on that in the coming months.  In the meantime, I’ll leave you with one last bonus item.  The CBB draft grades using the Buildthe53.com trade value chart by Tyler Hague!
