2020 Season - Week #16

SAN FRANCISCO 49ers @ Arizona Cardinals

PHOENIX - The race to the finish line in the NFC West is on after the Arizona Cardinals beat the visiting 49ers 23-20 Sunday.  San Francisco needed a win to lock up the division but couldn't get it done as Arizona (9-6, 3-2 NFC West) used a late field goal to win it.

San Francisco (9-5-1, 2-3) was down a large portion of their roster due to injury and it showed.  Especially detrimental to their game plan was having both Julio Jones and Tyler Boyd out with injuries.  "No excuses." Coach Kyle Shanahan said, "Next man up.  This is the NFL.  Everyone is dealing with injuries."

Alvin Kamara did what he could, rushing for 83 yards and two touchdowns, but it wasn't enough.  Now San Francisco heads into week 17 with everything on the line.  Winner of their game against Seattle (9-6) takes the division.  With a loss, the Niners would need a loss by either Arizona (9-6) or Atlanta (9-6) to get in as a wild card.

Seattle and San Francisco for the division in week 17?  Sign us up.

Tennessee Titans @ GREEN BAY PACKERS

GREEN BAY - The Packers continued their hot second half of the season beating up the Tennessee Titans 28-3 in a snowy Sunday night game at Lambeau Field.  With the weather impacting game plans, Green Bay (10-4-1) turned to the running game and Damien Williams.  The running back out of Oklahoma did all the heavy lifting, rushing for 126 yards and 3 touchdowns.

On the other side Derrick Henry struggled to get going for Tennessee (6-9) and the Titans didn't have a game plan for playing from behind.  In a critical moment late in the 2nd quarter and Green Bay up 7-0, Tennessee decided to go for it on a 4th and goal from the one-yard line.  Henry was stuffed by rookie linebacker Zack Baun.  The Packers went down, kicked a field goal on the ensuing drive and the Titans were never close again.

The Packers (10-4-1) locked up a playoff berth with the win but now need some help if they want to win the division.  Green Bay would need to beat Chicago next week and hope for a Detroit upset of Minnesota to take the NFC North.  Anything other than exact scenario locks the Pack into the 5-seed and a trip to the winner of the NFC East in the playoffs.

Cincinnati Bengals @ HOUSTON TEXANS

HOUSTON - The streak continues! The Texans took down the visiting Bengals 34-17 Sunday.  The win was Houston's 4th in a row and keeps their slim playoff hopes alive.  Cincinnati (7-8) was greatly impacted by the absence of first overall pick Joe Burrow.  Backup DeShone Kizer did admirably but it wasn't enough as the Texans came out hot.

Houston (6-9) scored on their first two drives of the game (touchdown and field goal) then used a forced fumble on the ensuing kickoff to score again on a Le'Veon Bell touchdown.  "This team is clicking." Bell said, "I told y'all when I signed here that I was playing to win."

The Texans now sit in 2nd place in the division in a three way tie at 6-9 with Tennessee and Indianapolis.  Jacksonville is ahead of all three by one game at 7-8.  If Indianapolis can take down the Jaguars next week and the Texans can beat the Titans, there would be a three way tie at the top of the division with Jacksonville, Houston, and Indianapolis all at 7-9.  NFL tiebreakers would then come into effect, potentially causing chaos after a full 256 games have been played.

Buckle up folks.  Week 17 in the 3GML is going to be a good one.

2020 Season - Week #15

SAN FRANCISCO 49ers @ Dallas Cowboys

DALLAS - The Dallas Cowboys played themselves into the NFC East lead with a 24-21 win over the San Francisco 49ers.  The storyline coming into this one was the matchup between Teddy Bridgewater and Marcus Mariota.  There is quite a history with these quarterbacks.  Both were on New England last season after GM CD traded for Mariota mid-season following a poor start by Bridgewater.   Mariota ended up taking the Patriots all the way to the AFC Championship game.  When the team moved out west with CD this offseason, coach Kyle Shanahan named Bridgewater the starter, prompting the team to trade Mariota to the Cowboys.

Mariota was asked before the game if this one had any extra meaning.  "Yes and no I guess.  I mean I was disappointed they gave up on me, but I'm really just focused on getting this team to the playoffs."  Mariota said.

Whether or not there was extra meaning, Mariota had the last word, driving the Cowboys (7-7) down the field and taking it in for the score on a 21 yard scramble.

The score left San Francisco (9-4-1) shell-shocked after Teddy Bridgewater led his own scoring drive seconds earlier to give the Niners the lead.  "Wasn't good enough today.  Need to complete more passes." Bridgewater said after the game.

Things are getting interesting for San Francisco as they hold a 1.5 game division lead over both the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks with two games left on their schedule.  Their next two opponents?  Arizona and Seattle.

Carolina Panthers @ GREEN BAY PACKERS

GREEN BAY - Aaron Rodgers continued his torrid play of late as the Packers beat the visiting Carolina Panthers 48-26.  Green Bay (9-4-1) moved the ball with ease on offense all afternoon.  Actually, Rodgers and JuJu Smith-Schuster moved the ball with ease.  Smith-Shuster was dynamic all afternoon and accounted for the majority of the offense, racking up 191 yards on 11 catches and three touchdowns.

"Happy to be a part of this team.  Just want to quietly go about my business and get the job done.  I'm not going to be flashy and dance on Instaface or TikTweet before a game or anything like that." Smith-Schuster said after the game.

Green Bay is all of a sudden within striking distance of their division and the number one seed after loses by New Orleans, Minnesota, and San Francisco.  All four teams now have four loses and if the Packers finish strong they could be looking at a division championship and playoff bye.  A lot still has to go right as the Pack do not control their own destiny, but things have changed dramatically in a week.  Green Bay will try to keep rolling next week against the Tennessee Titans at Lambeau field on Sunday Night Football.

HOUSTON TEXANS @ Indianapolis Colts

INDIANAPOLIS - Three weeks removed from a top draft pick, the Houston Texans suddenly find themselves less concerned with who they will draft and more concerned with a potential playoff spot after their third win in a row.  Houston (5-9, 3-2 AFC South) used a late 4th quarter score to down the Indianapolis Colts 27-20 and keep their slim hopes alive.

The Colts (6-8, 1-4) looked unstoppable most of the game as Philip Rivers completed his first 27 attempts and the Texans defense struggled to get off the field.  However, they did just enough to give their offense a chance.

Combined with a Jacksonville Jaguars loss, the Texans now find themselves only one game out of the division lead with two games to go.  "To quote Herm Edwards, 'You play to win the game.'" Coach David Shaw said, "I'm not concerned with draft picks in April, I'm concerned with wins in December."

Houston will look to make it four in a row next week as they take on the Cincinnati Bengals.

2020 Season - Week #14

Washington Football Team @ SAN FRANCISCO 49ers

SAN FRANCISCO - In a game that turned on a dime, the San Francisco 49ers (9-3-1) battled from behind to score 22 unanswered points and beat the Washington Football Team 22-14.  Things looked bleak early as the WFT raced out to a 14-0 lead and were in the redone ready to score again.  That's when safety Marcus Williams made the play of the game and intercepted former Texans quarterback Cam Newton.

"Right place, right time.  We were giving up way too many yards early so I'm glad I could turn things around for us." Williams said.

Even though the turnover didn't result in points, it kept Washington off the board and allowed the offense to warm up.  Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has looked a little shaky of late, but settled in during the second half.  Add a JC Jackson pick six into the mix and you had just enough for a Niners victory.

San Francisco will try to stay in the hunt for the number one seed as they head to Dallas next week to take on the Cowboys.

GREEN BAY PACKERS @ Detroit Lions

DETROIT - The Green Bay Packers bounced back from their disappointing overtime loss last week to defeat the Detroit Lions 24-20.  Detroit (4-9, 2-3 NFC North) was riding the momentum of a three-game winning streak, but came up just short in the end.

The Packer defense had a field day, racking up nine total sacks including four by Harold Landry.  Landry has been stellar all year for this Green Bay unit and now has 16 total on the year.  "I feel like everything is clicking.  I have seven in the last two games, so I want to build on that heading into the playoffs." Landry said after the game.

On offense, quarterback Aaron Rodgers was on fire most of the game throwing for 257 yards and ending up with three total TDs (two passing and one rushing).  Rodgers has narrowed or eliminated the gap in MVP voting with his late season purge.  The latest Vegas odds have him neck and neck with San Francisco quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.  "Winning back to back MVP awards would mean a lot, especially at my age." Rodgers said when asked about the race.

Green Bay (8-4-1, 3-2) looks to be headed for a wild card spot at this point as Minnesota may be too far away to catch.  The Packers will continue their campaign next week as they host the Carolina Panthers.

HOUSTON TEXANS @ Chicago Bears

CHICAGO - Don't look now, but the Houston Texans have a winning streak.  The Texans bested the Chicago Bears 21-14 in Chicago Sunday.  Houston (4-9) now finds themselves only two games back in the weak AFC South which is remarkable considering two weeks ago the conversation was about the number one overall pick.

The Houston defense was once again the story as the rag tag unit stymied the Bears (5-8) offense most of the afternoon.  Defensive tackle Jaleel Johnson continued his strong year and was very disruptive to the running attack on multiple occasions.  "I'm glad coach gave me a chance.  I feel great." Johnson said about his impact role.

The defensive backs unit stepped up as well Sunday.  Tied 7-7, Chicago had the ball and looked ready to score when Bobby McCain intercepted a Mitch Trubisky pass and returned it 94 yards to the house.  McCain has been arguably the best player on the entire Texans roster all year and it's plays like these that make Houston fans excited for the future.

The Texans will get a chance to inch closer in the division as they take on the AFC South leading 6-7 Colts next week.

2020 Season - Week #13

Buffalo Bills @ SAN FRANCISCO 49ers

SAN FRANCISCO - The Teddy Bridgewater for MVP train got back on the tracks Monday night as the San Francisco 49ers defeated the visiting Buffalo Bills 23-17.  Bridgewater used his legs to pick up multiple first downs in a game where the rushing attack couldn't get going.

"I felt locked in tonight.  The scramble was open.  They took other aspects of our attack out of things, so I did what I had to do to help our team win." Bridgewater said.

San Francisco (8-3-1) stayed in the race with Minnesota, New Orleans, and Green Bay for the NFC's all-important number one seed.  When asked about the race, coach Kyle Shanahan said, "We're only focused on who's in front of us.  We have a tough game against Washington next week.  I didn't pay attention to the other scores this week.  If we win games, things will take care of themselves."

The Niners host the NFC East leading Football Team next week.

Indianapolis Colts @ HOUSTON TEXANS

HOUSTON - The Houston Texans snapped their five game losing streak to upset division leader Indianapolis 16-13.  The Colts (6-6, 1-3 AFC South) looked to be in control all game and were up 13-0 later in the third quarter.  Then Houston (3-9, 2-2) woke up and looked like the team from earlier in the year.

Andy Dalton was efficient on the day throwing for 254 yards and moving the offense when the team really needed it.  "Man, it feels great to get a W." Dalton said.

The game ball however, has to go to Mike Daniels, who was.disruptive all afternoon.  Daniels ended up with eight tackles, four sacks, and a forced fumble.  His play will likely have him in the conversation for defensive player of the week.  "This team's got fight, man.  I know our record doesn't show it, but we're a gritty group that is going to bring it every game." He said after the game.

Houston will try to make it two in a row as they head to Chicago to take on the Bears.

Philadelphia Eagles @ GREEN BAY PACKERS

GREEN BAY - In what will go down as a very strange game, the Green Bay Packers lost in overtime 26-23 to the Philadelphia Eagles.  This was Green Bay's (7-4-1) fourth overtime game of the season.

The Packers out played the Eagles (4-8) most of the afternoon, but couldn't put them away.  Carson Wentz flipped a switch late and carved up the Green Bay defense throwing for 356 yards, 2 touchdowns and an interception.

Green Bay lost the coin toss in overtime but got the ball after they forced a punt.  A holding penalty and a sack on their offensive possession proved fatal as they had to give the ball back to Philadelphia and that was that.

The Packers will try to regroup from this crushing loss next week in Detroit against a Lions team that has won three in a row.

2020 Season - Week #12

SAN FRANCISCO 49ers @ Los Angeles Rams

LOS ANGELES - The San Francisco 49ers lost their second game in a row Sunday, falling to the Los Angeles Rams 23-16.  After rattling off seven wins in a row, the Niners (7-3-1, 2-2 NFC West) have gone winless their last three games (0-2-1).

"Our offense just seems a little out of sync." Coach Kyle Shanahan said, "We have to do a better job of getting started. We took three quarters to get out of first gear."

Alvin Kamara, who was garnering MVP talk early in the season, only touched the ball 10 times (5 carries and 5 receptions).  He appeared visibly frustrated after the game.  "Man, I want to help.  I know I can help.  It's just frustrating sometimes." Kamara said.

The loss muddies the water a bit for the Niners playoff seeding hopes.  The number one seed and bye is still attainable but the team likely will need some help getting there.  The road doesn't get easier as San Francisco hosts the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football next week.

HOUSTON TEXANS @ Detroit Lions

DETROIT - The Houston Texans stayed in the hunt for the top pick in next years draft after falling 28-21 to the Detroit Lions.  In what was a matchup of two 2-8 teams, it was the Lions (3-8) that came out on top in the end.

Things were not going Houston's way early, including some questionable clock management before half time that left points on the board.  However, gritty 4th quarter play by Andy Dalton and company got the Texans (2-9) back into it.  Trailing by 14 with seven minutes to go, Houston marched down the field and scored on a Ryan Switzer touchdown reception to cut the lead in half.  Detroit ran a fair amount of time off the clock but had to punt it back to the Texans with 57 seconds left.  Dalton got his offense to the 50 yard line with 18 seconds left but, when his team needed him most, threw an interception to end the game.

"That's on me man.  I was trying to get us a little closer so we had a shot at the end zone but it was the wrong throw." Dalton said after the game.

Houston will continue on next week as they host the division-leading Indianapolis Colts.

Chicago Bears @ GREEN BAY PACKERS

GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers won their third game in a row in blow-out fashion, dismantling the Chicago Bears 59-10.  Quarterback Aaron Rodgers was otherworldly, throwing for 503 yards, 6 touchdowns, rushing for another touchdown and finishing with a perfect quarterback rating of 158.3.  "I felt locked-in today.  The reads were easy and receivers were open.  I have to give Coach Bieniemy credit for bringing in Matt [LaFluer] earlier this season.  That tandem has been able to do wonders with our offense these past few weeks."

Rodgers is right as Green Bay (7-3-1, 2-2 NFC North) has been on a tear of late, scoring 133 points (44.3/game) during the last three wins.  Stefon Diggs has been unleashed in the new offensive scheme and went off for nine catches, 181 yards and three touchdowns.  Diggs now leads the entire league in receiving yards. "Blessed.  I have the greatest quarterback in the league throwing me the ball.  Did you guys see that last one?  I looked back and thought Aaron was down, next thing I know the ball is coming my way in the end zone." Diggs said, referring to a 51 yard touchdown pass where Rodgers avoided a sack by Roquan Smith to thrown the bomb.

The loss moved the Bears (5-6. 1-2) down the ladder in the NFC North while getting Green Bay within a game of the outright division lead.  The Packers will look to keep rolling next week as they host the Philadelphia Eagles at Lambeau Field.

2020 Season - Week #11

New England Patriots @ HOUSTON TEXANS

HOUSTON - The skid continued for the Houston Texans as they lost their 4th game in a row, falling to the New England Patriots 38-14.  The Texans (2-8) had no answer for Deshaun Watson and the Patriots (6-4) all afternoon.  New England marched up and down the field in the first half and scored touchdowns on their first five possessions putting the game out of reach before half time.

"Man, I just felt this extra motivation today, like Houston wronged me in some way I can't put into words.  Not sure what it is, but I'm just happy with my performance today." Watson said after the game.

For Houston, expect a shuffling with defensive play calling duties.  Early indications are pointing to head coach David Shaw getting more involved with his defense and he could commandeer the responsibility.  Something needs to change for Houston as they have only two turnovers to their name the entire season and are on pace to break the dubious record for fewest in a season.

Looking to the future, the Texans are sitting in the third spot for next year's NFL Draft.  If this holds they are likely out of the running for Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields, making their decision a little more interesting for their fan base.

Houston has a short week as they take on the Detroit Lions at Ford Field on Thanksgiving day.

GREEN BAY PACKERS @ Indianapolis Colts

INDIANAPOLIS - The Green Bay Packers beat the Indianapolis Colts 41-25 Sunday afternoon in a game that was closer than the final score indicates.  The Packers (6-3-1) clearly looked like the better team but an early pick six and a couple of timely sacks by the Colts (6-4) kept the score close until the 4th quarter.

The Packers have had two giant question marks in their season up to this point; red zone offense and getting defensive stops.  Today they answered both.  Aaron Rodgers was electric and clearly more aggressive than he's been most of the season, throwing for for 351 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 interception.  He threw the passes his team needed and it resulted in points.

Defensively, the Packers looked like a completely different team, forcing five turnovers by Philip Rivers (4 interceptions and a fumble lost).  Josey Jewell, who had two of the interceptions said after the game, "Coach made some shifts and ultimately it paid off.  I got my butt chewed after last week and knew I needed to play better.  Glad I could help my team."

Green Bay is currently the 6 seed in the NFC and will look to improve their position Sunday night as they host the Chicago Bears.

2020 Season - Week #10

 HOUSTON TEXANS @ Cleveland Browns

CLEVELAND - The skid continued for the Houston Texans as they were blown out on the road by the Cleveland Browns 43-10.  The Browns (4-5) kept their playoff hopes alive as they dominated every aspect of the game putting up 448 yards of total offense.

Houston (2-7) continued to look like a team in full rebuild mode.  Quarterback Andy Dalton's return to the lineup did not go as planned.  Dalton only amassed 192 yards with two interceptions on the day.  "I struggled today, no question." Dalton said, " I feel like I let the team down.  I'll look at the tape and learn."

The bright spot on the day for the Texans?  Le'Veon Bell looked like the 2017 version of himself, rushing 16 times for 108 yards and a touchdown along with five catches for 36 yards.  "I know we have a long ways to go but I trust this organization.  I'm here for the long haul.  GM TH brought me in to be a cornerstone.  I plan to see this through." Bell said after the game.

Fans have to be happy at this point Houston kept their top-five draft hopes alive.  Things don't get any easier either with the New England Patriots coming to town next week.

Jacksonville Jaguars @ GREEN BAY PACKERS

GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers played in their third straight overtime game this week and now have one of each possible outcome to show for it with a 33-27 win over the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars.  After a loss two weeks ago to Minnesota and a tie last week to San Francisco, the Packers (5-3-1) finally got the result they were looking for this time around in OT.

Things look bleak early as Jacksonville (5-4) rushed out to a 14-0 lead through one quarter.  The Green Bay defense struggled to get off the field and it seemed as though it was going to be a long afternoon.  However, after strip sack of quarterback Gardner Minshew, the Pack were right back in it as they got on the board with a field goal.

Jacksonville stalled for a majority of the second quarter and Green Bay climbed back into the game, heading to half time down 17-10.  That's when the fireworks started and NFL fans were treated to the game of the day.  The Packers made it down the field midway through the third quarter and were presented with a 3rd and goal to go opportunity.  Red zone offense has been an Achilles heel for the home team and it looked like the O would stall again.  Aaron Rodgers had other plans as he called his own number on a read option.  The Jaguars looked ready, but Rodgers viciously stiff-armed rookie corner Daniel Thomas to the ground and walked into the end zone tying the game at 17.  "Wasn't going to be denied on that one." Rodgers said.

Garnder Minshew answered on the next drive, picking apart the Green Bay defense like he did all day.  Before the Packers could blink, the Jaguars had retaken the lead 24-17 on Lamar Miller touchdown run.  A pair of field goals by both teams in the 4th quarter had the score at 27-20 Jacksonville with less than two minutes to go.  The game looked like it might be swinging back in Green Bay's favor after two huge catches by Justin Jefferson put the Pack within striking distance.  However, a poor decision by Rodgers to hold onto the ball too long gave Jacksonville an easy sack setting up a 4th and 24 with almost no time left.

This is when things got bonkers and Aaron Rodgers connected with Stefon Diggs for not only the first down, but a 47 yard touchdown, tying the game at 27.  Lambeau Field lost it and things headed to overtime.  "That's a little play we call PA Crossers.  We haven't run it in a couple of years, but the defense gave me the look and I just needed enough time for Stefon to clear the safety.  Luckily the time was there and the rest is history." Rodgers said.

You may have thought that things couldn't have gotten any crazier.  However, you'd be wrong as every news outlet in the country will be talking about what came next.  Jacksonville won the coin toss in overtime and Coach Doug Marrone seemingly forgetting how overtime in the NFL works, deferred to Green Bay who happily elected to receive.

Green Bay didn't reward Marrone's Lambeau leap of faith though, as they marched down the field and scored on a Damien Williams rush from the one yard line winning the game.  The Packers rushed the field and the Jaguars coach looked genuinely confused on the sideline.   "I liked our chances on defense.  I thought we could get them in 2nd overtime if they scored." Marrone said after the game.  When explained the rules of overtime by a reporter, Marrone walked out of the interview and could be heard yelling obscenities down the hallway.

"I was genuinely shocked at the coin toss. " Defensive tackle Geno Atkins said, "Like, I thought they were joking or the refs were going to ask them if they were sure."

The mockery came swiftly online and on television.  "Are you serious?  That has to be the stupidest decision I've ever seen.  Did he think this was college football?  Doug, you're not at Syracuse any more!  My goodness!" Stephen A. Smith said.

Green Bay was happy to be the beneficiary and will look to keep rolling next week as the take on the Colts in Indianapolis.

SAN FRANCISCO 49ers @ New Orleans Saints

NEW ORLEANS - The San Francisco 49ers will head into their bye with a bad taste in their mouth after dropping a high profile match-up against the New Orleans Saints 21-3.  The 49ers (7-2-1) came out flat on their first offensive possession, turning the ball over on a Teddy Bridgewater interception.  Things didn't get much better from there as their next three trips to Saints territory resulted in a missed field goal, the clock running out on them before half, and a turnover on downs.

Bridgewater who has played like an MVP all season said after the game, "Just didn't have it today.  I know we'll be fine.  We still control our destiny.  No need to panic."

On the bright side, the San Francisco defense kept things close until the 4th quarter with constant pressure and tight coverage.  New Orleans (7-2) struggled to move the ball up the field most of the game.  However, the dam broke late and San Francisco was left with too little time to battle back.

The 49ers will reevaluate next week on bye.

2020 Season - Week #9

GREEN BAY PACKERS @ SAN FRANCISCO 49ers

SANTA CLARA - In a game that seemed destined for ESPN Classic, Mother Nature had other plans as the Green Bay Packers (4-3-1) and San Francisco 49ers (7-1-1) played to a 24-24 tie.  The game started like a heavy-weight prize fight and ended like a middle school debate where everyone gets a trophy.

The winds were howling all night which made kicking field goals anything but given.  In fact, many felt like they were back in Candlestick Park when they felt the gusts.  The conditions forced both teams to reevaluate their special teams game plan as was evident when San Francisco tried a fake field goal deep in Green Bay territory late in the second quarter. The play failed and allowed the Packers to drive down and score a touchdown on a nifty catch and run by Clyde Edwards-Helaire as time ran out.  Green Bay headed into the half up 17-14.

After a defensive struggle in the 3rd quarter, Green Bay put a scoring drive together to start the 4th and go up 10.  San Francisco was undeterred and answered with a touchdown of their own on a Teddy Bridgewater pass to Julio Jones.  After a three and out by the Packers, the 49ers had just enough time to attempt a field goal for the tie.  Kicker Dan Bailey had to battle the wind, but was able to knock it down.

San Francisco won the coin toss but had to punt, giving Green Bay the opportunity to win.  Aaron Rodgers who was electric on the night throwing for 396 yards, was able to get his team to the 30 yard line setting up a winning field goal attempt.  However, Coach Eric Bieniemy, likely worried by the wind, opted for a fake field goal pass and back up quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's pass hit the turf giving the Niners one more chance.  Again they stalled and ultimately Green Bay wasn't left enough time to score.  The game was over and both team left the field unsure of how to feel about the outcome.

"I thought we had a better chance with the element of surprise than we did to make the kick in that wind." Bieniemy said after the game.

Kicker Jason Sanders didn't agree, "I could have made that kick."

Both teams will have a few extra days to regroup as San Francisco heads to New Orleans and Green Bay heads home to take on Jacksonville.

HOUSTON TEXANS @ Jacksonville Jaguars

JACKSONVILLE - The banged up Houston Texans couldn't muster enough offense in a 19-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.  Without starting quarterback Andy Dalton, the Texans (2-6, 1-2 AFC South) were forced to turn to former first round pick Josh Rosen.  The Jaguars (5-3, 3-1) defense did just enough to keep Rosen off balance and pull out the win.

Houston has shown grit all season and has remained competitive in games even with a roster lacking talent.  "Our guys fight every day," Coach David Shaw said, "Our defense has a bend, don't break mentality and the guys up front on offense give us a shot every game.  Our record doesn't reflect who we are."

The Texans will likely be looking at a top 10 draft pick in April and with multiple quarterbacks projected to be picked in that range, the attention of the fan base will be on who their next signal-caller might be.  GM TH has a big job ahead this offseason and all eyes in the 3GML will be on what he decides to do.

In the short-term, Houston heads to Cleveland to take on the Browns.

2020 Season - Week #8

SAN FRANCISCO 49ers @ Seattle Seahawks

SEATTLE - The San Francisco 49ers continued their impressive winning streak agains division rival Seattle Sunday with a 41-20 win.  The Niners (7-1, 2-1 NFC West) won their 7th straight after dropping their season opener and showed no signs of slowing down.  Combine their dominance with the Seahawks (3-4, 0-1) inability to keep up and things were out of reach by half time.

"Defensively, this team has to get a lot better." Coach Pete Carroll said after the game.  "We didn't have an answer for [Teddy] Bridgewater all afternoon.  He did whatever he wanted."

Bridgewater showed poise after San Francisco fell down 7-0 early, cooly driving the offense down the field drive after drive.  "Winning here is extra special.  To take one from this team in their house? Man, that's awesome."  Bridgewater said.

The two headed monster of running backs Alvin Kamara and Phillip Lindsay made waves as well.  Lindsay put the team in short yardage situations most of the game and Lindsay showed his ability to catch passes out of the backfield when a 3rd down conversion was needed.

"I really like the dynamic of those two." Coach Kyle Shanahan said, "They both bring something unique to the game plan.  It's fun to build a strategy around them."

Up next for San Francisco is a Thursday night game against 3GML rival Green Bay.

Minnesota Vikings @ GREEN BAY PACKERS

GREEN BAY - The Packers (4-3, 1-2 NFC North) dropped a heartbreaker 30-24 in overtime to division rival Minnesota (6-1, 2-0).  The Green Bay offense was again in a funk and had 4 turnovers on the day (2 interceptions and 2 fumbles).  Things looked so bad that the kicker Jason Sanders had more touchdown passes (1 on a fake field goal) than the quarterback Aaron Rodgers (0).

The game looked promising early when Royce Freeman broke things open with a long touchdown run, but after that the offense repeatedly stalled (or turned it over) and it was struggle from there.  To their credit, Green Bay did drive down and kick a field goal to tie it with a few seconds left on the clock to force overtime.  However, after winning the toss, the offense went 3 and out and punted back to Minnesota who drive down, scored and won the game.

Rumors are starting to swirl about play-calling duties in Green Bay now.  Don't expect any changes with the Packers set to take on San Francisco in a short week, but another poor performance and those rumors could get a lot louder.

2020 Season - Week #7

SAN FRANCISCO 49ers @ New England Patriots

FOXBOROUGH, MA - San Francisco's win streak hit six games as the 49ers (6-1) held on late against Deshaun Watson and the New England Patriots (4-2).  The game between the one-loss teams lived up to the hype, but it was the 49ers who added to the W column with a 34-31 win.

In a back and forth game, it came down to the 4th quarter after things were tied 20-20 through three quarters of play.  This is when Teddy Bridgewater decided to cement himself as 3GML MVP frontrunner, leading the offense on two impressive drives for touchdowns.  They proved to be the deciding factor in the game after a last gasp comeback bid by the Patriots came up short.  "Man, I let out a big exhale there when the clock hit zero.  That was a tough game against a tough opponent.  We knew they were never out of it until time ran out."  Bridgewater said.

The Niners quarterback was electric accounting for all four of his team's touchdowns.  Bridgewater's final stat line? 20 of 26 for 219 yards passing with two TDs thrown AND nine rushes for 68 yards with two more rushing touchdowns.  Right now, the man is doing it all and things are looking up for the team from the Bay.

The road doesn't get any easier, though, as San Francisco heads to the Pacific Northwest to take on their division rival, the Seattle Seahawks.

GREEN BAY PACKERS @ HOUSTON TEXANS

HOUSTON - In a game between two teams in two very different spots, the win now Green Bay Packers (4-2) took out the rebuilding Houston Texans (2-5) 29-14 in Houston.  The game looked as though it might be close early after Houston answered an opening drive touchdown by the Packers with a Ryan Switzer touchdown of their own to knot things up a 7-7.  The gritty slot receiver is making a name for himself in Houston and is definitely the leader in the clubhouse for the coveted 3GML Orson Charles award.

However, the highlights ended there for the Texans as Green Bay marched up and down the field the rest of the afternoon punting only once.  Houston struggled to pressure quarterback Aaron Rodgers all day and he had plenty of time to find open receivers down field.  Rodgers finished the afternoon with 290 yards passing and two touchdowns.  "I honestly feel pretty good after this one.  Didn't take too many hits so I think I can skip the ice bath and head straight for the scotch tonight." Rodgers said with a grin.

Defensively the Green Bay defense held Houston to 179 total yards on offense and was very effective in keeping the Texans out of the red zone.  Safety Budda Baker continued to shine defensively and was all over the field on the afternoon finishing with 12 tackles including one for a loss.  "We're starting to gel as a unit.  I like where we are."  Baker said.

Houston will rest up on their bye next week while Green Bay has a major test as they take on rival Minnesota who they trail by one game in the division.

2020 Season - Week #6

Los Angeles Rams @ SAN FRANCISCO 49ers
SAN FRANCISCO - In what may have been the most exciting game of the year so far, the San Francisco 49ers (5-1, 1-1 NFC West) fought back to beat the visiting Los Angeles Rams (3-3, 0-1) by a score of 24-23.

The game looked like it was about to get away from San Francisco early as they found themselves down 14-0 and in danger of giving the ball back to the Rams after getting stuck in a 3rd and 10 in their own territory.  Los Angeles had a miscommunication in their secondary and next thing you know, Julio Jones was walking into the end zone for a 75-yard touchdown making in 14-7.  "I don't find myself that wide open very often.  I just wanted to make sure I didn't drop it." Jones said.

After a Rams field goal made it 17-7, the 49ers doubled up with a field goal to end the half and a touchdown to open the 3rd making it even at 17.  San Francisco looked to be in trouble as Los Angeles drove deep into their territory twice late.  However, both times, the defensive front came through and held the Rams to field goals making it 23-17.  After one final defensive stand, quarterback Teddy Bridgewater got the ball back with a chance to execute the two-minute drill and win the game.  Not only did he march the offense down the field, but he punctuated the drive himself scrambling 15 yards for the go-ahead TD.  After a Hail Mary try by Jared Goff failed, San Francisco found itself the last team standing with a division win.

"Proud of the effort today."  Bridgewater said.  "These guys never gave up and always believed we could win.  Division games always carry a little extra importance, so to get this one felt really good."

San Francisco heads to the Eastern Time Zone to take on the New England Patriots next week.

GREEN BAY PACKERS @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers
TAMPA BAY - The Green Bay Packers got back on track against Tom Brady and the new look Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-16.  The Packers (3-2) looked to be off to another sluggish offensive start, not picking up a first down until mid way through the 2nd quarter.  However, things picked up when Rodgers found Stefon Diggs for a TD right before the half.

Green Bay came out of the locker room after the half and looked like a different team.  Aaron Rodgers picked apart the Tampa Bay (3-3) defense the rest of the day, spreading the ball around to his multiple weapons. JuJu Smith-Schuster had multiple 3rd down catches as well as a touchdown on the day.  "Man, that felt good.  We went back to our roots of throwing the ball a bit more," Smith-Schuster said after the game.

The Pack will stay on the road next week when they take on the Houston Texans in what will be the first matchup of former AFC East GMs SD and TH since they left their respective teams this offseason.

HOUSTON TEXANS @ Tennessee Titans
TENNESSEE - The Andy Dalton era started with a bang in Houston as the Texans (2-4, 1-1 AFC South) beat the Tennessee Titans 36-27.  The Titans (1-5, 0-2) rushed out to a 21-3 lead early in the second quarter and things looked bleak.  That's when Jaleel Johnson and the Texans D buckled down and gave their offense a change.  Johnson was all over the place on the afternoon and his energy was contagious.

Once the Houston D slowed Derrick Henry and the Titans offense, Dalton settled down and moved the Texans down the field, battling back to a 21-16 half time deficit.  In the second half, Raheem Mostert broke out and it was Tennessee who were on their heels.  Mostert who rushed for 158 yards and a TD, gave the Texans the lead late in the third and they never looked back.  "Had a good game.  Got to give the O line credit.  They busted their butts today."  Mostert said.

Tennessee tried to threaten later but a Zach Cunningham pick six put an end to that and the game was essentially over.

As for the new QB, Dalton did just enough throwing for 220 yards and TD (although he had 200 more passing yards and 3 TDs called back on penalties in the game).  "Felt good man.  We switched up the game plan when I took over and I felt like it went pretty well." Dalton said.

Houston takes on the Packers next week in what will likely be a good one.

Breaking News: Houston Texans Trade Cam Newton to Washington Football Team

HOUSTON - In an absolute shocker, the Houston Texans traded starting quarterback Cam Newton to the Washington Football Team for a 2nd and 4th round pick.  The Texans also sent a 6th rounder to Washington.  Houston is sitting at 1-4 in their first year of a roster overhaul and likely read the writing on the wall regarding the team's outlook this season.

GM TH said in his press conference, "We want to thank Cam for coming in and being the leader he was for our young guys.  He will be missed in the locker room and Washington is getting a hell of a football player.  However, we have a long term goal of winning titles here and I had to balance the future of this ball club against our odds for the rest of this season."

For what it's worth, this is the second time GM TH has traded the star quarterback away.  Back in 2015, while GM of the New York Jets, TH traded Newton for a slew of picks after the quarterback struggled with fumble issues.  Newton couldn't be reached for comment but posted the emoji eyes on his instagram account.

His agent James "Bus" Cook, however, didn't hold back regarding his client being dealt mid-season. "Obviously, this GM thinks my client is just a commodity that can be signed and dealt for draft picks.  We came here despite what happened in New York and Cam proved he belonged.  If he [TH] wants to operate this way, maybe he should go into the stock market business."

Houston wasn't done dealing either.  The Texans also sent Bradley McDougald and DJ Fluker to the Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers respectively for draft capital.

Now the focus turns to what Houston can do the rest of this season.  While 1-4 isn't great, the Texans are still only two games back in the division.  Andy Dalton will be the starter the rest of the way.

2020 Season - Week #5

Miami Dolphins @ SAN FRANCISCO 49ers

SAN FRANCISCO - The Miami Dolphins (0-5) never got off the bus mentally in a 37-10 drubbing by the San Francisco 49ers (4-1).  The Dolphins were down for the count before the 1st quarter even ended with interceptions by Ryan Fitzpatrick on their first three possessions including a pick six by 49ers cornerback Marshon Lattimore.  "Like the roll this defense is on.  Everyone is stepping up.  Don't sleep on us."  Lattimore said.

The interceptions gave San Francisco a short field to work with and their rushing attack did the rest.  Phillip Lindsay was a welcome sight for this offense after a foot injury sidelined him for the past three weeks.  Lindsay rushed for 71 yards and a TD. "Glad to be back.  Alvin [Kamara] was a workhorse these past few weeks and this team appreciated that, but it's a long season and we need to two-headed attack." He said after the game.

Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was everything his team needed as well.  Due to the large early lead, San Francisco only threw the ball 20 times in the game, but that didn't mean Bridgewater wasn't a big part of the offense.  In fact he was their leading rusher, running 12 times for 113 yards and a TD.  "My legs were needed more than my arm today.  Doesn't matter to me as long as we get the W." Bridgewater said.

San Francisco's red hot start will be tested the next seven games as they enter one of the toughest stretches in any NFL schedule with games against the Rams, Patriots, Seahawks, Packers, Saints, Rams, and Bills.

Jacksonville Jaguars @ HOUSTON TEXANS

HOUSTON - The Houston Texans (1-4, 0-1 AFC South) dropped a heart-breaker 22-14 to the Jacksonville Jaguars (3-2, 2-1) Sunday.  Pundits weren't sure what to expect from this team after their expansion draft, but it looks like they may be a year or two away from being able to compete.

GM TH said after the game, "It's disappointing, but not unexpected.  I love the fire our team is playing with every week.  These guys compete, but we definitely have some holes on our roster.  You combine that with some of the injuries we've had and we know this team has a ways to go before we're ready to win division titles."

When asked about balancing this year versus long term success the GM said, "Great question.  My job is to set this football team up for success so if that means picking up the phone and trying to improve our future, I'm going to do that."

An unnamed official familiar with the Texans front office said, "Yeah, it's a fire sale now.  Anything not tied down is for sale."

Houston fans will have to decide if they are rooting for Ws or draft order next week when the Texans take on the Tennessee Titans.

2020 Season - Week #4

Philadelphia Eagles @ SAN FRANCISCO 49ers

SAN FRANCISCO - Defense was the name of the game Sunday by the bay as the San Francisco 49ers (3-1) defeated the Philadelphia Eagles (1-3) by a score of 10-6.  Both teams struggled to move the ball all day but it was San Francisco with the lone touchdown (a rush by quarterback Teddy Bridgewater) that proved to be the difference.

Safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson stepped up huge when his team needed him and finished with six tackles (one for a loss), a sack, and an interception off quarterback Carson Wentz.  "This is who we are.  This our identity.  Defense.  We keep us in games.  Expect more of this for sure."  Gardner-Johnson said.

To his point, during San Francisco's current three game winning streak, the defense has held their opponents to seven points or less in each game.  Philadelphia threatened a few times in this one, but each time the 49ers defense kept its opponent out of the end zone.

San Francisco will look to keep rolling next week as they take on the Miami Dolphins at home.

Minnesota Vikings @ HOUSTON TEXANS

HOUSTON - The Houston Texans dropped a tough one to the Minnesota Vikings (4-0) Sunday 23-7.  Houston (1-3) struggled on offense all day and ended the game with no touchdowns or field goals.  Their lone score came on a strip sack by Bobby McCain that was returned by Cre'Von LeBlanc for a touchdown.

Coach David Shaw said after the game, "We have to be better on offense.  I was not happy with what I saw out there."

When asked about quarterback Cam Newton's performance (16-27 for 161 yards and three fumbles) and what it meant for next week, Shaw replied, "Next question."

In fact, Texans beat reporters have already heard rumblings that a change at quarterback could be on the horizon.  It was unclear if that meant next week or if Newton would be given another shot.

Regardless, with reliable veteran Andy Dalton in the quarterbacks room, there is bound to be chatter all week as the Texans get ready to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Atlanta Falcons @ GREEN BAY PACKERS

GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packer offense once again struggled in a 20-10 loss to the Atlanta Falcons (2-2) on Monday Night Football.  The Packers (2-2) only amassed 233 total yards on offense as they struggled to get things going all night.

Play calling seemed questionable at best as the offense never found its rhythm.  "I tried to be more balanced these past two weeks and it obviously hasn't worked out great.  We have the greatest quarterback in the league and you can expect to see more from his right arm moving forward." Eric Beiniemy said in his presser.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire continues to be a bright spot for the Packers with his grit and determination to fight for extra yards.  In fact, there were many times he moved the chains by making men miss and falling forward.  "Just trying to do whatever I can to help this team win games.  I feel like we're about to break out." He said.

Green Bay heads into its bye next week and will try to regroup after their tough loss.

2020 Season - Week #3

SAN FRANCISCO 49ers @ New York Giants

NEW JERSEY - The San Francisco 49ers are probably a little sad to head home after another dominating performance in the Meadowlands this Sunday.  Playing in New Jersey in back-to-back weeks, the Niners (2-1) took care of the New York Giants (1-2) 36-7 a week after dismantling the Jets in the same stadium.

"Yeah, you could say we enjoyed our time here." said Alvin Kamara after the game.  Kamara was again effective on this field racking up 140 yards on 30 carries with 2 touchdowns for a total of 288 yards and 3 TDs in his two games here.

"Alvin had another monster game.  We were so effective running the ball with him we just didn't want to take it out of his hands.  He's probably going to need to ice up a bit after this one.  Looking forward to getting his running mate back I'm sure." Coach Kyle Shanahan after the game.

After a loss to open the season, the 49ers are making a statement with their domination.  One NFC scout said, "That was a really good team, against a team that, if this were European soccer, they'd be relegated to Morocco.  That was a whooping."

San Francisco will have to show they can beat better teams to keep themselves in good playoff standing in a tough NFC West.  That starts next week when they host the Philadelphia Eagles.

GREEN BAY PACKERS @ New Orleans Saints

NEW ORLEANS - In an absolute dog fight, the Green Bay Packers (2-1) outlasted the New Orleans Saints (2-1) by a score of 16-7.  In a game which was billed as a matchup featuring two great offenses, it was the defenses that set the tone, keeping things tight all day.  Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees, two hall of fame quarterbacks, combined for zero touchdowns and two interceptions (one each) if that gives you any indication of what this game was like.

With the Saints driving late in the second quarter and threatening to go up 14-3 after moving into the red zone, the Packers defense made what ended up being the difference in the game.  Guarding wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, Casey Hayward deflected a Brees pass up into the air.  Safety Budda Baker was there to come down with the ball and returned it to the house for a 94 yard pick-six.

"Right place, right time.  Gotta give Casey credit for breaking it up.  We practice tip drill all the time in practice for plays just like that." Baker said after the game.

Green Bay will look to reignite their offense and push their wining streak to three next week against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night.

HOUSTON TEXANS @ Pittsburgh Steelers

PITTSBURGH - Riding high after a huge upset last week against the Baltimore Ravens, the Houston Texans (1-2) came out and had the football equivalent of a PBFU (post-birdie fudge up) in golf against the Pittsburgh Steelers (2-1), dropping the game 34-6.

Houston's offense has had some key injuries this year and it showed against one of the NFL's best defenses.  Already without wide receiver Denzel Mims, the Texans added receiver Sterling Shepard, center Brandon Linder, and running back Raheem Mostert to their inactives before the game.

"We are banged up on offense, no doubt." Coach David Shaw said, "But that's no excuse.  This is the NFL and we have to do better."

Houston struggled to move the ball all day amassing 255 yards total on offense.  Their defense was on the field a lot as a result and Pittsburgh wore them down late.

The Texans tough schedule continues next week when they host the 3-0 Minnesota Vikings.

2020 Season - Week #2

SAN FRANCISCO 49ers @ New York Jets

NEW JERSEY - A week after dropping their opener the San Francisco 49ers bounced back in a big way with a 24-7 win over the New York Jets.  The 49ers (1-1) used a ground and pound attack to keep the Jets (1-1) offense off the field.  Alvin Kamara was a workhorse all afternoon to the tune of 148 yards on 30 carries with one touchdown.

Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was efficient as well going 18 of 26 for 229 yards and a TD of his own.  "Felt good to get that first W.  Offense felt pretty good.  Have to keep things going man.  Can't let off the gas." Bridgewater said in his post game press conference.

The score could have been even more one sided, but the Jets defense had some key stops on the day.  "Sloppy. Too many misses on 3rd and 4th down conversions.  We are going to have to play better if we expect to hang with our division." Coach Kyle Shanahan stated after the game.

San Francisco stays in the Garden State next week as they take on the New York Giants.

Baltimore Ravens @ HOUSTON TEXANS

HOUSTON - The Houston Texans (1-1) sent shock waves through the NFL Sunday afternoon with their surprising 13-6 upset of Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens (1-1).

Houston's defense was dynamic causing Jackson to feel uncomfortable all afternoon and coming up with multiple 3rd down stops. Defensive captain Zach Cunningham said, "Nobody said we could win this game.  We believed in ourselves and our game plan.  Lamar is a heck of a quarterback, but guys just stepped up on this D.  So proud of this unit."

Jackson struggled to get things going, only passing for 168 yards on the afternoon.

The Texans offense did just enough to give themselves a chance by committing no turnovers and using a late touchdown rush by Leonard Fournette to give them the lead for good.

Cam Newton was dynamic on the ground rushing 15 times for 90 yards and picking up multiple first downs when his team needed it the most.  "Gotta give them credit for their coverage today, not much was there.  I just saw daylight and ran."

After a complete rebuild with an expansion roster, the Texans have their first signature win and will look to continue things next week in Pittsburgh against a solid Steelers team.

Detroit Lions @ GREEN BAY PACKERS

GREEN BAY - In what was the most exciting of the 10 morning NFL games, the Green Bay Packers (1-1, 1-1 NFC North) used a late touchdown drive from Aaron Rodgers to beat the Detroit Lions (0-2, 0-2) by a score of 31-27.

Trailing 27-24 after the Lions scored right outside the two-minute warning, Rodgers took the Packers offense 79 yards down the field and capped the drive with a 20 yard touchdown to Robert Foster in the back of the end zone.

Rodgers put up massive numbers on the day throwing for 459 yards and 3 touchdowns on 47 attempts.  However, he also put his team in a bind with two key interceptions including a pick six right before the half.  "I have to be better.  I just got a little too aggressive trying to fit the ball in tight windows.  Glad we came out on top of this one."

When asked about his teams 47 pass attempts to 13 rush attempts, Coach Eric Bieniemy blamed himself for the imbalance.  "We have to establish the run.  I got away from it too early in the game and I think it put a lot of pressure on our defense to be on the field for so many minutes.  You can expect us to be more balanced next week."

Green Bay faces their toughest challenge yet as they head down to New Orleans to take on the 2-0 Saints in the Superdome.

2020 Season - Week #1

 2020 3GML SEASON

Week #1

HOUSTON TEXANS @ Kansas City Chiefs

KANSAS CITY - After a fast first quarter, the Kansas City Chiefs (1-0) outlasted the Houston Texans (0-1) 31-26 at Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday Night.

The expansion Texans rolled out their ground-and-pound attack with mixed results. HB Raheem Mostert dropped a sure touchdown early but bounced back with a strong game finishing with 81 total yards and TD.

“We’ll find our footing,” Mostert said. “That is a good team over there; If we see them again I think it’ll be different.”

Newly paid MLB Zach Cunningham played well all night with 7 tackles and strong coverage throughout.

“Fans are out there buying my jersey - I gotta represent,” Cunningham said. “We’re still getting to know each other - We’ll be alright.”

Recently acquired fan favorite Ryan Switzer scored a TD early in the 4th quarter while the game was still in reach. The slot receiver trended on Twitter for most of the night due to his electric run-after-the-catches and plucky disposition.

“I can’t really explain the love I receive, but I’ll take it,” Switzer said. “Hashtag...Thanks?”

The Texans face another tough test next week as they take on Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens.

GREEN BAY PACKERS @ Minnesota Vikings

MINNEAPOLIS - In a defensive struggle the Green Bay Packers (0-1, 0-1 NFC North) fell 17-21 against the Minnesota Vikings (1-0, 1-0).

Late in the 4th both Harrison Phillips and Casey Hayward came up with crucial plays to put the team in a position to potentially steal the game late.

For most of the game reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers continued his strong play from a year ago against a tough NFC North opponent. But late in the 4th quarter Rodgers tried to fit a pass into a tight window and was picked off to end the game.

“Every day I get to put on this Green Bay Packers jersey is an honor,” Rodgers said. “Our sole job this year is to bring the Lombardi trophy home to Lambeau Field. We just didn’t get it done today.”

Rookie Justin Jefferson hauled in his first NFL TD after the break - The LSU product looks to be a keeper for the Pack.

“Great feeling to get on the field,” Jefferson said. “We just gotta keep grinding and get back at it.”

Budda Baker flew around the field all night to justify his new contract. The fourth year player is looking to step into a leadership role this year in Green Bay.

Green Bay will look to rebound next week against the Detroit Lions.

Arizona Cardinals @ SAN FRANCISCO 49ers

SAN FRANCISCO - In a battle of dual threat quarterbacks, Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals (1-0, 1-0 NFC West) outlasted Teddy Bridgewater and the San Francisco 49ers (0-1, 0-1) with a 28-24 win.  Murray was electric and used his legs to do the most damage including the go ahead touchdown late in the fourth.

San Francisco was able to move the ball most of the day but a critical interception by Bridgewater when the 49ers were trying to go ahead late sealed the deal.

“I have to be better.  This was a battle between two great teams and we were going toe to toe all day.  We’ll get them back in their place later this year.”

Coach Kyle Shanahan, however, was not happy with his team’s defensive effort.

“Deandre Hopkins was allowed to do whatever he wanted out there today.  I’ll have to look at the tape but there will be some words with our secondary in meetings this week.”

Bay Area talk radio will likely be debating a pair of Shanahan’s 4th down decisions Sunday afternoon.  Early in the game on a 4th and goal, the Niners went for it and came up empty.  Later, when many would have argued they should have gone for it, he kicked the field goal.

San Francisco will look to bounce back in New York against the Jets next week.

3GML Season Just Around the Corner

We are mere days away from the start to the 2020 3GML season.  Here are a few headlines we're following as the season approaches.

Houston - How will the Texans look after a massive rebuild?  Houston blew up their roster and participated in the NFL's fantasy draft process over the off-season.  Their roster is still in the process of gelling during camp and we want to see if GM TH put a team together that competes or needs to time to marinate.

San Francisco - Will the talent on this roster outside of quarterback be enough?  It's not that these other positions are an area of weakness, rather, they will likely be asked to do a lot.  Teddy Bridgewater will be the man under center this season and while he's shown flashes, there were some big mistakes made last season in the 3GML.  If we see a similar pattern emerge, the rest of the 49ers roster will need to step up in an extremely tough division.  There's a lot of talent on this roster and GM CD is hoping the will be a buffer if the QB play experiences some hiccups.

Green Bay - Who is going to play cornerback to start the season? - With Greedy Williams banged up and likely to miss significant time and Mackensie Alexander potentially facing a suspension for his arrest earlier this week, the Green Bay packers are looking at a big hole in their secondary.  Stalwart Casey Hayward is still back there so it could be worse, but after him on the depth chart?  Things get interesting with unproven and inexperienced players.  It is looking very likely the Packers will need to sign someone to be their number two for the start of the season.

3GML Training Camps Set to Open July 28th

The year 2020 had been slogging along without much hope for peace and happiness, particularly in the United States. With many sports league cancellations, a digital NFL Draft and a divided country, all looked lost.
As fate would have it, one of sports most recent abject failures stepped up to provide sports fans and the rest of the world with good news.
"Right place, right time mate," Adam Gase said. "Glad I could help."
After being fired during the middle of the 2019 season, Gase spent much of his time in awkward situations - mostly with perceived ghosts hiding around AFC East stadiums.
Gase, on what he called a "scouting trip" in Wyoming, was bitten by a rattle snake. The former Dolphins and Jets Head Coach walked a presumed 27 miles to a gas station while his leg swelled to seven times its regular size. Instead of asking for the staff to call 911, Gase asked for a Mountain Dew Code Red and to fill up a gas canister for him. Gase, after drinking both the gas and the soft drink, began doing jumping jacks. All of this is well documented, but long story short, once the police arrived and hooked Gase up to an IV and tested his blood, they realized that the rattle snake venom and Mountain Dew mixed was an effective cure for COVID-19.
The world was saved.
"I'm just glad the Jets hired me back," Gase said. "And I'll find that damn rattler some day."
Now, with the world back on track, NFL Training Camps are set to open on July 28th.
Look for a few more splash signings for the 3GML squads particularly.
San Francisco has been in talks with Everson Griffen while the Houston Texans are reportedly wanting Colin Kaepernick to join their team to backup Cam Newton.
We are all excited for football to be back for the 2020 season.
"I know I'm new here, but we're coming for the Lombardi Trophy," Jadeveon Clowney said. "Time to get back on the field."

Houston Expansion Draft Complete

The Houston Texans wrapped up their expansion draft and have a new roster to ready roll out in 2020.  With the first pick, Houston selected Left Tackle Jake Matthews from the Green Bay Packers.  GM TH stated, "Jake is a bright tackle we can build our offense around."
The Texans went on to select two more offensive lineman with picks two and three, choosing Center Brandon Linder from Jacksonville and Guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif from Kansas City respectively.  Houston rounded out the top five with Running Back Marlon Mack from the Colts and Defensive End Tyrone Crawford from Dallas.
By the end of the night, Houston had selected 43 players from around the league.  Experience ranged from rookie contracts to experienced vets.  Some other noteworthy names include WR Sterling Shephard, Tight End Kyle Rudolph, Safety Patrick Chung and Quarterback Josh Rosen.
The Texans then went on to sign free agents Cam Newton to be their starter at quarterback and Linebacker Nigel Bradham to lead the defense.
How will Houston fare in the upcoming 3GML season?  Stay tuned!

Houston to Participate in Expansion Draft

BREAKING: The Houston Texans will participate in their second expansion draft in team history after GM TH convinced the NFL to approve the process.   The terms were agreed upon late last night and Houston will select 43 players from an expansion pool consisting of players from the remaining NFL teams.  Each team will place five players into the pool but no more than two can be selected by the Texans.  Additionally, teams can only select one player with 10 or more years experience to be made eligible.  If a player is selected, Houston would be responsible for the player's entire contract and the previous team would have no cap penalty for the transaction.

When reached for comment, GM TH said, "We wanted a fresh start.  Our team was built by Bill O'Brien, so ownership and I agreed it was time to turn the page.  I talked to coach [Lincoln] Riley last night and he was excited for the challenge."

Usually the expansion process happens before the NFL Draft, so the Texans will be at a bit of a disadvantage when it comes to building a competitive team.  They will only have the expansion draft and free agency to put together its roster.  All things considered, it may be a few years before the Texans are on the right side of .500.

QBs Set to Dominate the Headlines in 2020

For the past five seasons the AFC East has ruled the NFL like the SEC has dominated college football. While Alabama and LSU have continued to lift trophies (along with Clemson from the ACC), the AFC East teams had been passing the Lombardi trophy through the division ranks.
After Buffalo's 19-0 perfect season and an anticipated spreading of arguably the league's four most respected General Managers throughout the league, you could hear a collective sigh of relief from beleaguered fans wanting some sort of changing of the guard atop the standings.
With three of those four GMs taking jobs in different conferences and divisions, we will now see if any of these highly decorated executives can vault their new teams to the top.
In Green Bay, the talk of the season will be the potential passing of the torch from future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers to highly touted rookie Tua Tagavailoa from Alabama.
"I'm not going to say I was thrilled by the pick," Rodgers said. "But I understand that the organization is thinking not just about the present ,but the future."
The Packers are still poised to win now. In addition to Tagavailoa the team also added WR Justin Jefferson from LSU to appease their current QB.
For the San Francisco 49ers, the storied franchise will hope for a healthy season for Teddy Bridgewater as the team aims to determine if they have their long-term solution at the game's most important position or if they need to find a different answer.
"Throughout his career, he's someone who makes everyone around him better," Kyle Shanahan said. "I think he's the perfect fit for us, for our offense, for where our team wants to go."
Waiting in the wings is Marcus Mariota who took over admirably for Bridgewater midway through last season and led the team to the playoffs.
The question in Houston is who will start during the 2020 season. The Texans will have options in the upcoming expansion draft and in free agency, but will they be able to choose a franchise QB?  The eyes of the NFL world will be on Houston and their upcoming decision.
As the Miami Dolphins get ready for 2020, the team kept the world guessing about their final QB plans and ultimately settled on Andy Dalton to take the reins this season. After trading for Cam Newton, drafting Jalen Hurts and then releasing Newton following the draft, Dalton became available and was quickly scooped up by the Dolphins.
"Andy Dalton's, I think, a very underrated quarterback," GM EP said. "His teammates (will) love him to death and he's productive in the NFL, he values the football."
Miami's calling card will be their defense. If Dalton can protect the football and have a 'Ryan Tannehill-esque' season, the Dolphins could surprise as this year's Tennessee Titans.

Summary: Green Bay plays a tough road heavy schedule early with games at, Minnesota, at New Orleans, at Tampa Bay, at Houston, and at San Francisco.  If they can come out of the first 8 weeks at 4-4 or better, the second half of the season sets up nicely for them with a heavy slate of home games and only two teams that made the playoffs in 2019 (Philadelphia and Tennessee).  Pay attention early to the games against the Saints, Buccaneers, and 49ers as the outcome could play a major role in playoff seeding.

Houston Texans
Week 1 - @ Chiefs - L

Toughest Back-to-Back - @ Kansas City, vs. Baltimore

Summary: Houston starts their season with the two toughest AFC opponents in Kansas City and Baltimore.  The only silver lining is they get the Ravens at home.  The Texans would love a split here but it's not likely.  After their Week 8 bye, they face only two 2019 playoff teams in New England (minus Tom Brady) and Tennessee but look for this team to still struggle after its expansion draft.  The Colts will present a challenge to Houston in the division so keep an eye on weeks 13 and 15 when they play each other twice in three weeks.

San Francisco 49ers
Week 1 - vs. Cardinals - W

Easiest Division Opponent - Los Angeles Rams
Toughest Non-Division Opponent - New Orleans
Easiest Non- Division Opponent - New York Jets
Toughest Back-to-Back - vs. Green Bay, @ New Orleans

Summary: The Niners may have one of the toughest schedules in the league with seven games against 2019 playoff teams and multiple games against teams on the upswing (Arizona, Dallas, and Washington).  Their toughest back-to-back is really a back-to-back-to back with the Seahawks, Packers, and Saints all in a row.  After a hot start, San Francisco could be cooled down by this trifecta of solid teams.  The NFC West is looking like it could be the toughest in all of football so if the 49ers can get to 10 wins, it'd be a successful campaign.

Consensus Big Board Draft Grades

With the 3GML draft still in our rearview mirror, I thought I’d take a stab at providing some draft grades.  Tyler recently evaluated the 3GML team drafts within the context of the 3GML world, looking at team need, scheme fit, and value, with in-depth interviews of the 3GML general managers.  There is certain insight that can only be provided through a qualitative analysis of each team’s situation in detail, and Tyler did an excellent job with his analysis.  To complement his work, I thought I’d take a step back and look at the 3GML draft in the context of real NFL teams using a broader analytical approach.
There was a multitude of directions I could take this – I opted for the perhaps the simplest, being still a novice in the analytics world.  I decided grades would be based on draft pick value.  Specifically, I chose to look at the value of a team’s pick versus the value of a player’s estimated draft pick (EDP), or the pick where the player is expected to be drafted at / valued at versus the rest of the draft class.  For instance, if Player A’s EDP is 15 overall, and he is drafted by a team at 20 overall, this is good value.  But it had to be more than that, because if Player B is valued at 145 overall, and is drafted at 150 overall, that value is should not be equivalent to Player A’s.  Thus, I weighted each pick to its respective trade value based on the Jimmy Johnson (JJ) table (we can argue the validity of that table another time, but at the moment, we still use that table for 3GML trades).
There are pros and cons to such an approach.  At minimum, it provides a baseline by which to grade every team’s draft using the same metrics.  However, such an approach is not situationally biased.  For instance, team needs are not factored in here.  If Chicago wants to take a TE, and the selection is good value based on EDP, it doesn’t matter if they already roster 8 TE’s – the value is in the pick.  Introducing team needs into the equation is difficult, and adds a tint of subjectivity to the analysis (who’s to say Chicago doesn’t need 9 TE’s? … that’s a joke I promise).  This approach also doesn’t currently factor in positional value; it is something that I hope to work more on in the future, but at present, I don’t have the historical draft and player performance data needed to objectively weight each position.  So for now, grades are determined by EDP value vs. draft pick value.
The Consensus Big Board
While EDP is a familiar term, it isn’t universal.  Someone has to establish a player’s EDP.  We all have Big Boards, but those are subjective.  I needed something objective.  Thankfully, the folks at The Athletic did the work for me.  They created a “Consensus Big Board,” aggregated from the rankings gathered across NFL Draft media analysts.  The last version they updated contains the work of 68 different evaluators and forecasters. I use those terms specifically, as they state, “one type of analyst, the ‘forecasters,’ tend to have much more access to NFL and college personnel, which gives them information about injury concerns, character, off-field issues and behind-the-scenes information that could change our understanding of a player one way or the other. The other group, the ‘evaluators,’ rely on public data — primarily college game film and advanced statistics.”  The Athletic creates a board for each.  They suggest the Forecaster Board better reflects the actual draft than the Evaluator Board, which should be no surprise given the information they are gathering.  However, the Evaluator Board, they claim, is better at projecting NFL success.  The Consensus Big Board is a combination of both the Forecaster and Evaluator Boards – ideally the best of both worlds.  Whether that is the case, only time will tell, but for the present, we can compare the performance of all 3 boards (Consensus, Evaluator, and Forecaster) to the actual draft position of players to see which is the best predictor of draft positions.
Establishing Board “Performance”

The first thing I looked at was the ranking of every drafted player on each board vs. their actual draft position.  The results, shown above, are perhaps unsurprising.  All boards were better at predicting players draft positions earlier in the draft than later, where there is significant scatter in the data.  I broke this down further by looking performance per round by board.

The figure above compares the distribution of each board’s EDP vs actual draft position by round using box plots.  Draft rounds are indicated by the dashed horizontal lines.  Unsurprisingly, the 1st and 2nd rounds are pretty tight. The distribution of EDP versus actual draft locations largely fall within their respective rounds, although the distributions are skewed.  The long tales at lower picks suggest several players were taken in the 1st and 2nd round with lower relative EDP (and yes, those outliers in Rd 1 are indeed Seattle’s new LB Jordyn Brooks).  By Round 3, the EDP spread from 1st round to 6th round value for all 3 boards (I don’t know if that is an indictment of the boards or the NFL front offices…).  Despite the spread, the median EDP remain within their respective rounds until the 6th round, at which time the Consensus Board appears to be the least accurate, while the Forecaster Board the most accurate at predicting pick location.  However, this is purely a qualitative assessment.
To put numbers on this, I fit linear models for each boards EDP vs. actual draft location.  Looking strictly at their ability to predict the actual draft location, the Consensus Big Board was best overall (R2=0.65, RMSE 40.6), followed closely by the Forecaster Board (R2=0.648, RMSE=40.9).  The Evaluator Board lowest (R2=0.625, RMSE 42.2), but that should be no surprise.  As we’ve established, the Forecaster Board is based on what people are hearing from teams, so, in theory, it should better reflect what teams will do on draft night.   It may seem odd on the surface that the Consensus Big Board performed the best then, since it is a combination of both the Forecaster Board and the Evaluator board.  However, think of it as the best of both worlds, averaging out the weaknesses in both the Forecaster and Evaluator Boards.  While I include all 3 boards in my following analysis, final grades are determined by the better preforming Consensus Big Board (CBB).
NFL and 3GML Overall Draft Performance
With an EDP board in hand, team picks can be compared to EDP to establish value.  Luckily, the folks at The Athletic also kept track of the 255 picks in the 2020 NFL Draft, and included it on their board, making my job easier.  All I had to do was establish the value for each pick based on JJ trade chart.  Now, Jimmy Johnson may have been a good coach, but he was no mathematician.  His chart follows an exponential decay curve, but he rounded them out to make them clean numbers.  Thus, they don’t follow a nice equation that I could use to ascribe pick value easily – I would have to enter 255 values in by hand, since the teams decided that they weren’t going to draft in order based on The Athletic Consensus Board and the actual picks were spread all over the board.  I wasn’t going to do this, and although there was a workaround that maintained the JJ values exactly (involving coding up a script to locate the picks and create a new array of pick values rearranged in the order of the actual picks on the Consensus Big Board), I took the easy way out and just fit a function to the JJ value chart (at R2=0.998 I think we can all live with that decision).  So pick values you see below won’t perfectly match what you had written down.  Blame Jimmy…and my laziness.
I compared the player selected at each team’s pick (with corresponding JJ value) against the players’ respective EDP (and corresponding JJ value) on the 3 Big Boards to establish the value of each pick.  I totaled this up for each team, both in total points and percentage of original pick value.  To establish a grade, I repeated this, but then normalized the value difference between original pick value and player EDP value by the number of picks in the draft (255). What this does is set a baseline: if a team uses Pick 125 to pick a player with an EDP of 125, the score is zero, it is neither good nor bad value.  If they pick a player with an EDP above or below the actual pick value, the grade will be positive or negative and scaled based on the JJ value difference of the pick and EDP.  For example, the Miami Dolphins drafted OT Austin Jackson at Pick 18, but his Consensus Big Board EDP was 43, yielding a difference of 25 picks.  They went on later to pick G Solomon Kindley, a player with an EDP of 163, at pick 111, yielding a difference of 52 picks.  Their grade for the Jackson pick was -1.7 (bad), while their grade for the Kindley pick was only -0.2 (not that bad).  While the Kindley pick could be viewed as more of a reach by pick number, the value between Picks 111 and 163 (JJ = 47) is much less than the value between Picks 18 and 43 (JJ = 430).  Each team’s picks were graded as such and averaged to establish an Overall Draft Grade.  I repeated this entire process for the 3GML draft picks and compiled all of the grades and values into the table below to show how 3GML stacks up against the actual NFL front offices.

Teams are ranked by Overall Consensus Grade.  Since these numbers are not easily interpretable, I as established a GPA grade based on the Consensus Grade, and curved all GPA to the top grade (AZ Cardinals).  Again, the Consensus Grade encompasses all other aspects shown on this table (forecaster grade, evaluator grade, pick value above / below estimated draft position), but I split them out for your viewing pleasure.  One thing to note is the value that Buffalo got out of their draft with as little capital as they had (215.67% original value, vs. the poor value Seattle got out of their near league-average capital (32.78% original value).   In comparison, all 3GML teams got 96% or greater value from their picks, with the 3GML Texans maximizing their draft capital up to 162.2% of original value.  The table is fun to look at, so I won’t spend much time analyzing it here.
3GML Breakout
Instead, let’s look at each 3GML GM’s picks and draft grade.  For each team, I broke out the board by pick and for fun, threw in the first 5 UDFA to see if we got any value there (all UDFA were ascribed pick 256 to keep it even between teams).  Each team is discussed below in alphabetical order, with best value, worst value, and overall grade discussed.  For simplicity, I did not factor in value for trades, assuming that the move up or down accounted for the value of the new pick.  Therefore, when I say “original pick value,” I mean the value of the final picks for each team.
Green Bay Packers

Best Value: Edge Zach Baun
The Packers waited until pick 57 to draft the CBB’s 32 ranked player.  Baun had to wait a little longer in real life to hear his named called (pick 74), but the Pack gladly snatched him up in the bottom of the 2nd.  Edge was also a need for the 3GML Packers, so the Packers found that sweet spot where value = need.  Baun turned out to be the best value of the 3GMLs draft filled with good value throughout.
Worst Value: QB Tua Tagovailoa RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire
I know the numbers say Tua Tagovailoa was the worst value, but I can’t get on board with that conclusion.  The picks are weighted by the Jimmy Johnson Trade Value chart, which means the jump from 3 to 5 is significant.  No one in their right mind would think it was “Bad Value” to take the 2nd best quarterback and 5th overall player at 3.  The value of the QB position would negate this, but as I discussed above, I haven’t yet determined how to weight these grades by positional value.  So instead, I’m choosing to ignore the data and look at what many analysts would say is bad positional value – drafting RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire at pick 34. The Chiefs snagged him at pick 32 in real life, prompting the 3GML Packer’s GM to trade up grab him.  Turns out just picking him at 34 was poor value.  Regardless, the 3GML Packers GM got his guy in Edwards-Helaire, who will contribute early, so the Pack can live with the value.
Overall Grade: B-
The Packers draft class netted a 2.6 GPA, equivalent to a B- on the curved grade scale.  Retaining 99.2% of their original draft value is impressive, especially considering they had the 2nd most original draft capital (Miami was 1st and only maintained 74.5% value).  This grade has them in a five-way tie for 16th with the Rams, Colts, 3GML Chargers, and Titans, or in other words, around league average grade.

Houston Texans

Best Value: WR Denzel Mims
Many had Mims projected in the first round, but he managed to slip into the waiting arms of the 3GML Texans at pick 56.  Mims wouldn’t have to wait much longer in real life, being picked by the NY Jets at 59.  The CBB had Mims ranked at pick 33, just outside of the 1st round, so snagging the 33st ranked player at 56 yielded excellent value.  The 3GML Texans GM will also tell you that his value was truly better than indicate here.
Worst Value: DT James Lynch
The 3GML Texans GM identified James Lynch as one of “his guys,” so I doubt he cares that, analytically, this was his worst value pick.  At only -0.2 CBB grade, the pick wasn’t much of a reach.  The Texans took Lynch at pick 88, when he was valued 13 picks lower by the CBB.   Either way, Lynch was viewed as a back of the 3rd round player, and that’s where the 3GML Texans snagged him.
Overall Grade: B
The 3GML Texans had an excellent draft, make no mistake, but entering with such little draft capital put them behind the other teams to begin with.  By increasing their draft capital by 162.2%, the Texans secured a 3.1 GPA, good for a solid B and tied for 8 overall with the Carolina Panthers.

Miami Dolphins

Best Value: OT Josh Jones
Everyone was confused by OT Josh Jones’s tumble down the draft boards, but the 3GML Dolphins GM didn’t mind.  He snagged the CBB’s 29th ranked player at pick 42, yielding the best value in their draft class.  Jones would wait until the Cardinals snagged him at pick 72 in real life, but the 3GML Dolphins don’t mind.  They got great tackle prospect for good value, and he landed in a great situation in real life.
Worst Value: QB Jalen Hurts
We are beginning to see a common theme amongst the 3GML draft picks.  The worst value for each team seems to be the “my guys,” and QB Jalen Hurts was the guy tabbed as the future starter of the 3GML Chargers by their GM.  The 3GML Dolphins picked Hurts at 31, but he was the 71st overall player on the CBB.  Hurts ultimately went earlier than that, as a surprise 2nd round pick (53) by the Eagles, suggesting that his value to NFL teams may be closer to where the 3GML Dolphins valued him than previously thought.  Either way, Hurts is in the new face of the 3GML Dolphins franchise.
Overall Grade: B-
The Dolphins’ GM always drafts his own way, but his own way was still good for a 2.6 GPA, tied for 16th with the Rams, Colts, Titans, and 3GML Packers.  Retaining 96% of their original draft capital, the Dolphins register a league average B- grade.

San Francisco 49ers

Best Value: CB Kristian Fulton
Perhaps a surprise, but the 3GML 49ers pick of CB Kristian Fulton at 54 was better value than WR Ceedee Lamb at pick 14 according to the CBB.  Fulton was the 28th ranked player by the CBB.  Fulton fell to pick 61 in real life, where the Titans gladly drafted him to replace the loss of Logan Ryan.  The 49ers didn’t necessarily need another CB, but Fulton was valued even higher than his CBB value by the 3GML 49ers GM, who gladly moved up to snag him at 54.
Worst Value: QB Jordan Love
This wasn’t a “my guy” pick by the 3GML 49ers GM, who made it clear he did not value Love enough to take him at pick 13.  Instead, the need to bring in young QB talent prompted the 3GML 49ers GM to gamble on the talent of Love at pick 26.  The CBB ranked Love at Pick 35, although he would go at pick 26 to the real Green Bay Packers, and the 3GML 49ers GM could not be happier with Love’s landing spot.
Overall Grade: A-
The 3GML 49ers managed to land a good value draft according to the CBB, ending up with a 3.6 GPA (A-) good for 4th in the league.  The 3GML 49ers GM isn’t shy about saying he approaches the draft similar to the CBB, accruing observations from many sources (although certainly not 68 sources like The Athletic!) and modifying his board based on scheme fit and personal preference.  According to the CBB, the 3GML 49ers approach paid off, at least in the short term.
Conclusions

This was my first foray into an analytical draft grade for the real and 3GML teams.  The results yielded interesting findings and in large part corroborate observations by many sources (particularly on the worst draft classes).  The shortcoming of the approach are also apparent, as positional value is required to temper the negative grading of QBs for instance.  I hope to have a method in place when the 2021 NFL Draft rolls around next year.  Regardless, the analytical draft grades highlight the 3GML GMs' draft acumen in the 2020 NFL Draft!
