Rams’ Jet-Lag Gamble Pays Off as 49ers Fall 27-16 in Australia
MELBOURNE, Australia — The San Francisco 49ers spent a week acclimating to Australia.
The Los Angeles Rams apparently spent about a day acclimating to the concept of being in Australia.

The two NFC West rivals took radically different approaches to the NFL’s historic Melbourne trip. San Francisco arrived roughly a week before kickoff, giving Kyle Shanahan’s team time to adjust to the 17-hour difference from California. Los Angeles did essentially the opposite: Sean McVay’s team landed only about 28 hours before kickoff, intentionally trying to keep its players’ body clocks closer to Pacific Time. The Rams had even sent several players — including Kyren Williams — to Australia during the offseason as travel “guinea pigs” while developing the plan.
After Los Angeles’ 27-16 victory, the 3GML’s sports-science department has reached its preliminary conclusion:
Jet lag is apparently a skill issue.
Williams certainly looked awake. The Rams running back shredded San Francisco for 162 rushing yards and a touchdown, then added another touchdown through the air as Los Angeles controlled the game.
Meanwhile, the team that had actually learned what day it was struggled offensively.
Jordan Love threw for 224 yards with one touchdown and one interception, and San Francisco’s collection of CeeDee Lamb, Ladd McConkey, Jalen Coker and Jaylen Warren never developed the rhythm expected from one of the 3GML’s most talented offenses.
The 49ers did get a strong performance from Drue Tranquill, who recorded 12 tackles, but too many of those came after Williams had already moved the chains.
The real-life logic behind the Rams’ strategy makes the result even funnier. With kickoff at 10:35 a.m. Friday in Melbourne, it corresponded to 5:35 p.m. Thursday in California — much closer to a normal football hour for players whose internal clocks remained on West Coast time. One Australian sleep specialist interviewed before the game actually preferred the Rams’ approach, while acknowledging that either strategy had merit.
So Shanahan gave his players a week to acclimate, carefully manipulated sleep schedules and light exposure, and tried to get everyone operating on Australian time.
McVay basically said: Nobody touch the clocks.
Then the Rams flew halfway around the planet, handed Kyren Williams the football, won by 11 and presumably started looking for the plane home.
For San Francisco, there are much more important issues than travel science after Week 1.
But if these teams meet again later this season, Shanahan may want to simplify the itinerary.
Show up at the stadium directly from the airport.

Cardinals Stun Defending Champs, 33-10, as Love Runs Wild in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES — Apparently Arizona beating the Chargers in Week 1 is becoming a multiverse constant.
The defending 3GML champions opened their title defense with a thud, falling 33-10 to the Cardinals at home as rookie running back Jeremiyah Love erupted for 157 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries.
Jacoby Brissett supplied the steady hand, throwing for 301 yards and a touchdown, while Arizona's defense completely shut down Los Angeles after halftime. The Chargers entered the break with 10 points. They left the stadium with 10 points.
For Matthew Stafford, the follow-up to his remarkable 2025 postseason began quietly. The reigning champion threw for 223 yards, one touchdown and one interception, but the Chargers never established the offensive rhythm that made them nearly impossible to defend last January.
The result has an especially strange real-world parallel. The actual Cardinals also walked into SoFi Stadium this week and upset the Chargers, 26-14, with Brissett at quarterback and Love scoring a touchdown in his NFL debut.
The 3GML version apparently watched that film and decided the problem was Arizona hadn't beaten them badly enough.
There is little reason for panic after one game. BD's roster remains loaded, Christian McCaffrey remains the reigning league MVP and Stafford is only months removed from a postseason in which he threw 12 touchdowns without an interception.
But 33-10 at home is not the banner-raising performance anyone envisioned.
And after San Francisco lost its opener in Australia, both participants from last season's Super Bowl are suddenly 0-1.
The 2026 3GML season required exactly one weekend to become weird.
HOUSTON — So much for the preseason power rankings.
The Houston Texans entered Week 1 with perhaps the deepest roster in the 3GML. They exited their home opener after a 36-7 demolition by Buffalo in a game that was effectively over long before the clock said so.
Josh Allen threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns, directing a Bills offense that piled up 417 total yards. James Cook III added 106 rushing yards and a touchdown as Buffalo consistently found answers against a Houston defense loaded with Micah Parsons, DeForest Buckner, Denzel Ward, Budda Baker and Derwin James.
Houston had considerably fewer answers.
Drake Maye was held to 180 passing yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, and the Texans never generated enough offense to make Buffalo uncomfortable.
More remarkable is what the result means across the league. San Francisco opened with a loss to the Rams. The defending champion Chargers were blown out by Arizona. Now Houston — the team that looked strongest on paper entering camp — has been routed at home.
The three teams that entered 2026 with legitimate immediate championship expectations are a combined 0-3.
Somewhere in Green Bay, GM SD is presumably staring at Malik Willis and four 2027 first-round picks thinking:
“Wait. Are we the stable organization now?”
MINNEAPOLIS — Green Bay spent the offseason dismantling a dynasty, stockpiling an absurd collection of 2027 draft picks and preparing its fan base for something it hasn't experienced in years:
Meaningless football.
There appears to be one problem.
The Packers won.
Green Bay defeated Minnesota 23-16 in its season opener, leaving the supposed rebuilding team as the only 1-0 franchise in the 3GML after San Francisco, Los Angeles and Houston all lost in Week 1.
For Packers fans who spent the summer studying 2027 mock drafts, the emotions were complicated.
On one hand: beating the Vikings.
On the other: Guys, every win moves our pick down.
Malik Willis made matters worse for the tank enthusiasts. The bridge quarterback threw for 168 yards and a touchdown, then repeatedly hurt Minnesota with his legs, rushing for 72 yards and another score.
Green Bay's defense did even more damage to SD's carefully constructed draft position.
Kyler Murray was intercepted three times, with Kris Abrams-Draine, Ernest Jones IV and Henry To'oTo'o each recording a pick. The To'oTo'o interception came at a cost, however, as the linebacker was injured on the play.
Green Bay traded away stars, handed the offense to Willis and accumulated four first-round picks, two seconds and four thirds for 2027: 1-0.
There were unconfirmed reports of Packers fans leaving U.S. Bank Stadium chanting both “GO PACK GO!” and “STOP RUINING THE DRAFT POSITION!”
For one week, at least, the 3GML standings are upside down.
And GM SD has encountered the first major obstacle in his carefully planned rebuild:
His football team may not be bad enough.
