MIAMI (FL) -- GMs voting for Miami's front office as preseason 'GM of the Year' may want a re-vote as the team announced that CB Stephon Gilmore had failed the team's physical (quad). Many Dolphins fans had been waiting for the trade to show up on the official NFL transaction wire; Now we know the reason for the delay.
"It's frustrating," Gilmore said. "To think you're getting a fresh start and then having this happen is tough. But we'll keep working."
Although Miami seemed to be running a bit of a risk investing in a player rehabbing from an injury, Gilmore's progress back must have been slowed enough to give the team's doctors hesitation.
A frustrated Bill Belichick did not hold back when asked about the trade this morning.
"I think it is completely unacceptable on their end," Belichick said. "We were very clear where he was at and to void the deal over this injury is disingenuous on their part. They did the same thing with Richard (Sherman) and reacted without much foresight."
New Dolphins head coach Brian Johnson, having to deal with another cornerback acquisition controversy, did not shy away from confrontation with the Hall of Fame coach.
"I have tons of respect for New England's coach," Johnson said. "He created the conditions for Tom Brady to lead the team to all of their Super Bowl wins; He was willing to put his ego aside and understand that without Tom, New England was just another franchise - And their results last year helped put that into perspective. We are disappointed to lose out on an opportunity to add Stephon to our team, but we also like where we are at as a defense and think we can match up with the stronger teams in the AFC like Kansas City, Baltimore, Houston, and Buffalo."
With roster cutdown day looming, it looks like Miami will start their 2021 campaign with a less-than-intimidating starting CB core of Desmond King, Taron Johnson, and Elijah Molden. We will see if this trio can hold up.
