The NFL's odds on Super Bowl favorites (according to Las Vegas) have made a cost-cutting move ahead of their second pre-season game, moving All-Pro defensive tackle Gerald McCoy to the San Francisco 49ers for the team's 2017 2nd and 3rd round draft picks.
McCoy's heavy cap number was guaranteed through the 2017 with the team holding his rights through 2021 (at roughly $13 million per year during the life of the contract).
Salary cap experts around the country were scratching their heads wondering how the Bills would field a 53-man roster to start the season. Now, with $13 million more in breathing room, Buffalo can rest assured that they will not only have a full squad, but that they may also find a way to keep one of their Pro Bowl guards once they hit free agency after the season.
"You know, sometimes I wish we had baseball's rules (no salary cap)," Rex Ryan said. "It pisses me off to lose Gerald, especially at this point. But I get it, we have guys who can step in and do the job."
Rookie Jonathan Bullard now looks to have a more prominent role that previously thought. The rookie seems up for the task posting the following on his verified Twitter account:
Time to get that SB ring - you all knew I was comin' for that #1 spot. #SBLI
