Mid-Season Review: Buffalo Bills

2016 Record (7-1, 3-1 AFC East)

REVIEW
After consecutive victories over AFC East rivals Miami and New England, the 7-1 Bills are now firmly entrenched as Super Bowl favorites as the calendar turns to November. Now, a lot can happen in an NFL season, but a Rex Ryan-led team will always play smothering defense - couple that with Aaron Rodgers & Todd Gurley leading the offense and the 2016 Buffalo Bills are here to stay.
The team struggled in their first two games with less-than-convincing wins over the Ravens and Jets before experiencing a shocking loss to the Tom Brady-less Patriots.
That loss seemed to light a fire under the team as they then destroyed the LA Rams, shut out the San Francisco 49ers, and demolished the previously undefeated Dolphins.

BEST ACQUISITION
There are a few to choose from here, but a salary-dump-driven trade for Jelani Jenkins with the Seattle Seahawks for overpaid Mark Barron has yielded amazing dividends. Playing alongside Luke Kuechly and Clay Matthews will cause any player to be overlooked, but the play of Jenkins' has been awe-inspiring to say the least.
In coverage and against the run, Jenkins' lunch-pail mentality has rubbed off on his teammates and helped propel the league's #1 defense towards elite status.

BIGGEST BUST
It's hard to find fault with a team playing so well, but we will look at James White and Reggie Bush here. If Todd Gurley is to survive a 16-game season and a deep playoff run, the team needs to find a 10-12 touch player to spell Gurley as we head to the winter months. Gurley is set to have more touches in his first two years than Barry Sanders may have had over the entirety of his.

MID-SEASON OFFENSIVE & DEFENSIVE MVPS
Offensive MVP: HB Todd Gurley
There is nothing Gurley cannot do. His pace has him on track to lock up the NFL MVP trophy by Christmas. The scary thing about Gurley: He seems to be getting stronger despite the beatings he takes week in and week out. His 77-yard 2nd half TD run to bury the Patriots last week was like Nolan Ryan hitting 105 in the 9th inning - just warming up.
Defensive MVP: DT Geno Atkins
Atkins literally eats players during games. Well not literally, but it feels like it. The tackle has been so disruptive to start the season that teams have begun to not only double-team Atkins, but some triple-teams have started to be game-planned in an effort to drum up some sort of offense against the Bills. Try to not watch an Atkins highlight film without your mouth dropping to the floor.

A 13-3 regular season earns the Bills the AFC's #1 seed and a date with the #6 New York Jets in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.
The road to the Super Bowl goes through Buffalo - can the Bills finish what the 0-4 1990's Bills couldn't?

Mid-Season Review: Miami Dolphins

2016 Record (6-1, 1-1 AFC East)

REVIEW
A 35-14 beat down at the hands of the Buffalo Bills put a damper on what was looking to be a historic 2016 run for the Miami Dolphins. During their Week #8 Bye, the team seemingly fell out of favor around the entire NFL as a has-been.
However, the 6-1 Dolphins can now play the 'disrespect' card that propelled them to the 2015 Super Bowl title.
Run away victories over the Seahawks, Patriots, Browns, Bengals and Titans have been long forgotten as everyone will look to see if rookie Jacoby Brissett can rebound from the worst game of his short NFL career.

BEST ACQUISITION
Runningback Chris Ivory strolled into town and took the lead back duties away from Thomas Rawls from day one. Although being the #2 back in Miami is comparable to being a bell-cow for other teams, Ivory's status as one of the league's most punishing runners has been enhanced with some of his performances for the Dolphins as their RB1.
Due to their commitment to split carries amongst all their backs, Ivory will likely not lead the league in rushing, but his 7.8 yards per carry average has been turning heads all season.

BIGGEST BUST
Linebacker Reggie Ragland seemed to be a good fit when the Dolphins snagged him in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. However, injuries derailed the rookie's ability to quickly transition into first-year playing time before he was sent away to San Diego to be replaced by promising second year player Denzel Perryman.
The Dolphins are in win-now mode after their 6-1 start - their lack of patience with Ragland proves that point.

MID-SEASON OFFENSIVE & DEFENSIVE MVPS
Offensive MVP: LT Lane Johnson
Anyone who carries the ball in Miami is going to do well. That starts up front. Lane Johnson has been an absolute monster all season for the Dolphins. His 10-game suspension is devastating news for the team (although coaxing Phil Loadholt out of retirement has softened the blow). Runs to the left side of the Miami offense always gained yards with #69 plowing the way.
Defensive MVP: LE Courtney Upshaw
Upshaw's 6.0 sacks and countless quarterback pressures have been an unexpected bonus for a player who's job coming in was to simply set the edge for run defense.
The Alabama product has outpaced All-Pro Khalil Mack in most statistical categories (to be fair Mack is continuously facing double-teams all game long).

SECOND HALF SCHEDULE ANALYSIS AND PREDICTIONS

The Dolphins suffer through a 3-game losing streak only to end the season winning six of their last seven to finish as the AFC's #5 seed. A Divisional Round matchup with the #2 Jacksonville Jaguars would be the only thing standing in the way of an all-AFC East battle for a trip to the Super Bowl.

Mid-Season Review: New York Jets

2016 Record (3-5, 0-1 AFC East)

REVIEW
The first half of 2016 for the New York Jets has been maddening to say the least. The team could easily be 7-1 and has no business being under .500 at this point in the season.
Losses at the 1-yard line to the Ravens, Cardinals, and Chiefs have been must-see TV, but gut-wrenching for Jets faithful.
Rebound wins against the Seahawks & Steelers have shown the league that New York is a team that can truly win (or lose on any given Sunday).
But the trades are the story of the season so far for the New York Jets.
Acquiring players like Joey Bosa and Desmond Trufant in season is unheard of in the NFL.
But the team has a plan and is slowly stockpiling incredible on & off field assets.

BEST ACQUISITION
Rookie WR Braxton Miller has been lights out and one of the best rookies in the NFL to start the 2016 season. The Ohio State product has 762 yards receiving (despite missing a game to a separated shoulder).
His speed has stretched defenses allowing running back David Johnson to blossom into a pounding running force for the improving Jets offense.

BIGGEST BUST
A week ago Sam Bradford may have been listed as the best in-season acquisition by the free-wheeling team.
But after his 3-INT performance against the Browns and subsequent benching, Bradford will be holding a clipboard for Jimmy Garoppolo for the foreseeable future.

MID-SEASON OFFENSIVE & DEFENSIVE MVPS
Offensive MVP: HB David Johnson
As Johnson goes, so do the Jets. After a quiet start to the season, Todd Bowles smartly began to shift the offensive focus towards a ground attack (utilizing their overpowering line to open holes for Johnson, Derrick Henry, and company).
Defensive MVP: FS Joe Haden
Haden isn't the obvious choice, but his selfless decision to make a mid-season position change set the tone for the rest of the team to do whatever it takes in their effort to win.
His three interceptions as a safety have proven that Todd Bowles' recommendation to move Haden was the right one.

With a 2nd half surge, the New York Jets will finish 10-6 to sneak into the playoffs as a dangerous #6 seed. Expect the team to go on the road to face the Buffalo Bills in the #1 vs. #6 matchup in the Divisional Round of the playoffs (after the Jets defeat the Bills in a Week #17 matchup that sees Rex Ryan leave most of his starters on the bench after having the division locked up).

2016 Season - Week #8

New York Jets @ Cleveland Browns

                                    1         2         3         4         FINAL

NEW YORK              7       10         7         7        31
CLEVELAND           0         7         7         7        21

CLEVELAND – In a must win game for the New York Jets (3-5), the team outpaced the Cleveland Browns 31-21 to keep their flickering playoff hopes alive.
With newly arriving Joey Bosa and Desmond Trufant playing better than advertised, the Jets defense looked like a new unit.
Linebacker Darron Lee, taking over for jettisoned Navorro Bowman, played lights out in the first half with multiple bone-crunching tackles while picking up his first interception of the season.
Todd Bowles, in the build-up to the game, fully committed to a simplified version of the 3-4 defense to "let the players play."
And play they did.
For the game, the Browns were able to muster a paltry 29  yards rushing with only nine first downs.
"You can throw our record out," Bosa said. "It's a fresh start for us today moving forward. I said it yesterday and I'll say it today: We are here to eat."
The only Cleveland possessions that ended in points while the game was still in doubt were due to errant throws by New York's Sam Bradford.
Bradford had been on a positive arc for the Jets since his arrival from Minnesota, but Bowles had enough of the turnovers early in the 3rd quarter and handed the keys over to Jimmy Garoppolo.
The third year signal-caller, who was previously acquired from division rival Miami, proceeded to finish the game with a perfect 158.3 passer rating completing 14-of-15 passes for 204 yards with two touchdowns.
"Surreal moment for me," Garoppolo said. "I've had a lot of people throw dirt on my career after last year's benching (in Miami). It's just nice to get out here and play with my guys."
A motivated Garoppolo could be the ignitor to spark the Jets towards reaching that infamous 'potential' NFL execs have been eluding to since the draft.
The Eastern Illinois product is now set to head back to Miami to face the 6-1 Dolphins for his chance to not only prove that he should be the QB1 in South Beach, but to also proclaim his new team as a force to be reckoned with in the AFC East.

New England Patriots @ Buffalo Bills

                                    1         2         3         4         FINAL

NEW ENGLAND      3         7        0          0         10
BUFFALO                  3        21       7         14        45

BUFFALO – For years, the knock on Rex Ryan was that he would never be able to coach up an offense to the level of his defense.
Many would say that if only he had a quarterback...
Rex Ryan's dreams are coming true during this 2016 season.
With a fired up, revenge-seeking squad, the Buffalo Bills (7-1, 3-1 AFC East) embarrassed the New England Patriots (4-4, 1-2) 45-10 in front of a raucous home crowd.
"Let's put to rest that unbeatable thing about the Patriots, OK," Ryan said. "They've had a good run, but golly, it felt good to do whatever we wanted out there today. He's (Bill Belichick) probably still smarter than me at whatever people think makes you smart, but I'm pretty sure we proved that we're better at football stuff today."
Rookie Cyrus Jones was torched early and often by Buffalo's Tyler Lockett who finished with 11 catches for 118 yards and a score.
Jones, who was relentless with his trash talk leading up to the game, repeatedly offered no comment while sitting dejected at his locker after the clock hit :00.
The story of this game however, rested with the Bills co-MVP candidates: Todd Gurley and Geno Atkins.
If the season ended today, Gurley would unanimously run away with the league's top individual honor.
After his 25-carry, 202 yard, four TD performance, Gurley continues to be a fantasy owner's dream.
Atkins however, has been equally as dominant all season long.
His five tackles and 2.0 sacks do not properly demonstrate how dominant the defensive tackle was on a play-to-play basis in this game.
When not double or triple teamed, Atkins lived in the backfield, hounding a skiddish Tom Brady all game long.
"He's the best I've seen, probably ever," Brady said. "I played awful today and it was due to their pressure for sure."

The NFL's #1 team will take their road show to the Pacific Northwest next week as they battle the Seattle Seahawks.

Week #8 AFC East Preview

New York Jets @ Cleveland Browns
Due to their slow start to the season, a game which should have been viewed as a no-brainer for the away side on paper, has morphed into a showdown between two division bottom-feeders as the New York Jets travel to Cleveland to take on the Browns.
As the Indians and Cavaliers enjoy life-changing historical runs in their respective sports, we have the Browns to remind us of Cleveland's miserable past.
Not only have the Browns started poorly, they also dumped newly acquired franchise quarterback Cam Newton earlier in the season to go with...Ryan Tannehill as quarterback.
Tannehill will face his former Jets teammates - teammates who were glad to see him hit the door.
"I'm happier here in Cleveland," Tannehill said. "They (Jets) are trading players like baseball cards. That's not how you build a franchise -  you can't just plug and play guys. There's no chemistry there, just new assets each week. We're going to come out and prove that we are on the rise here in Cleveland."
Newly added Desmond Trufant, AJ Bouye, and Joey Bosa are all set to make their Jets debut in front of the Dawg Pound.
"San Diego signed me but was too frustrated with the whole contract deal to make it work long-term," Bosa said. "I'm glad to be with my new and forever teammates here in New York. We are ready to eat."
WHAT TO WATCH FOR: At some point this juggernaut on paper will begin to click. The Jets are too good to be under .500. A date with the Browns seems like the proper starting point as we head towards a turnaround.
PREDICTION: Jets win 24-0

New England Patriots @ Buffalo Bills
After their emphatic 35-14 victory over the previously undefeated Miami Dolphins, the Buffalo Bills have clearly established their place as the #1 team in all NFL Power Rankings.
Their 6-1 record exists with a singular blemish: A shocking Week #4 loss at New England (without Tom Brady).
"A lot was said after that game," Aaron Rodgers said. "We were frauds, not ready, and other stuff like that. We did not play our best football that day. But, I expect our team and home fans to come out ready on Sunday this time around."
Rookie Cyrus Jones had an historic night with three interceptions (two returned for touchdowns) during the Patriots victory four weeks ago. His comments after the game also made headlines as he seemingly dismissed Rodgers and his Bills teammates comparing them to current NCAA players.
"Coach (Bellichick) told me to button it up this week," Jones said. "But, man, you caught me in a moment. I couldn't remember scoring two on D or having three picks in a game since high school. So yeah, I'm gonna have to compare you to college guys if that's how you're playing at the moment."
A loss Sunday would push the Patriots to 4-4. Couple that with the strong play by the Bills (and the Dolphins despite their loss last week) and New England could be locked in to a dogfight to even make the playoffs in 2016.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Rodgers to target Cyrus Jones early and often. Aaron Rodgers, as we know, is a quiet assassin. He will look to change the narrative of Jones and company by getting even and then some Sunday.
PREDICTION: Bills win 31-21

2016 Season - Week #7

Baltimore Ravens @ New York Jets

                                    1         2         3         4         FINAL

BALTIMORE            7       14         0         3        24
NEW YORK              3       12         0         3        18

NEW YORK – The New York Jets (2-5) continued their San Diego Chargers-esque run of late collapses and near misses, falling 2-yards short of a victory in their 24-18 defeat at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens in MetLife Stadium.
A questionable 4th-and-2 leading to a Ravens pick-six in the 2nd quarter completely changed a game that saw the New York defense come up with 3 interceptions of their own while allowing only 283 total yards to the Ravens offense.
"It was a calculated risk that didn't work," Todd Bowles said. "Our o-line needs to wake their ***** up. We're paying $50 million a year for the best line in the league and our QB is getting two seconds per snap."
Sean Smith, with two of the afore-mentioned INTs kept the team in it, but the offense was never able to get back on track after the Bradford pick six and the team losing their most explosive playmaker when Braxton Miller left the game with a separated left shoulder.
"It hurts not being able to finish that game," Miller said. "I really think I could have helped the guys out."
New York will fly to Cleveland next week to square off against the hapless Browns.

Buffalo Bills @ Miami Dolphins

                                    1         2         3         4         FINAL

BUFFALO                  0        21        7         7         35
MIAMI                       7         7         0         0         14

MIAMI – The much-hyped affair between the Buffalo Bills (6-1, 2-1 AFC East) and the Miami Dolphins (6-1, 1-1) was settled during a 3-minute stretch late in the second quarter as the Bills ran away with a 35-14 statement win.
With his team leading 14-7 and in possession of the ball, rookie quarterback Jacoby Brissett double-clutched on a well-designed screen play while being chased by defensive MVP candidate Geno Atkins.
The Atkins pressure and hit caused Brissett to fumble the ball straight to the ever-aware Luke Kuechly who took it to the house to deadlock the score at 14 all.
"We knew it was going to come down to who made the most mistakes," Atkins said. "Both teams are very competitive and those turnovers always will make the difference."
A rattled Brissett lost another fumble on the following possession (before Todd Gurley gave the ball right back with a fumble of his own).
To put a stamp on his 2nd quarter to forget, Brissett then threw an ill-advised out in the direction of Clive Walford that was intercepted (leading to another Buffalo TD).
"That's all on me," Brissett said. "They disguised their coverages well and kept the pressure on us all day. I have to know when to take a sack or throw the ball away. I tip my hats to them."
Tyler Lockett was the offensive star of the day with 8-catches for 146 yards and a TD.
Amari Cooper added a long TD reception which served as a dagger to end the first half.
Miami will have their bye week to stew over their first loss of the season.
The Bills will head home to prepare for a showdown with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
